Wireless Network Access at SUU

Wireless access provides a convenient way for students to access the Internet using their own notebooks. Students with notebooks or PDAs that support 802.11b/g wireless can connect at up to 54mb per second. Wireless services are available in most academic buildings. Future plans include expanding to other areas on campus. We will announce these services and locations as they become available. The current Acceptable Use Policy and the Wireless Access Policy apply to wireless users.

Disclaimer of Liability

We make every effort to make the wireless network secure. However, there are known security vulnerabilities in wireless networks. See the Campus Computing, Internet Use, and Network Security policy for specific policies.

Recommended Hardware and Operating Systems

If you are buying a new laptop or wireless card, please look through the recommendations below. We recommend the following software and hardware to provide you with the most secure wireless connection available on the SUU campus.

Connecting to the Wireless Network

There are two options to connect to the SUU wireless network, which is outside the campus firewall, and therefore, susceptible to malicious activites. You should therefore have installed on your computer a personal firewall and virus software with up-to-date virus definitions.

Also, to help protect you from man-in-the-middle network attacks while connected to the SUU wireless network, you should also download and copy the ARP table static entries file to your start up folder, usually found in Start->All Programs->Startup.

ARP table static entries file

Option 1: Encrypted (recommended)

Option 1 uses WPA-PSK (sometimes referred to as WPA-Personal) encryption. This is more secure than option 2 and is the recommended method for connecting to the wireless network. You will need to login to a secure area to access configuration details and general instructions for configuring your computer.

Option 1 Configuration Details

Option 2: Non-encrypted (guest access)

Option 2 does not provide encryption, and is available for those computers that do not support WPA-PSK, or for campus guests that do not have a campus login. Data sent over this non-encrypted network is sent in clear text and may be easily viewable by others. It should not be considered secure for sensitive information, ie banking, e-commerce, etc.

To connect to the non-encrypted network:

  1. Start your wireless connection utility (usually found in the lower right toolbar).
  2. Scan for available networks
  3. Select the suu-guest network
  4. Click 'Connect'

                 or

enter suu-guest as the SSID in your computer's wireless configuration utiltiy.

No additional setup is required.

When you start your browser, you will be prompted for a username and password. The username is "guest" and the password is "Iagree". By using the guest network you agree to abide by the terms and conditions found in the Wireless Access Policy.
