Administration

Overview

The administration is responsible for handling the financial and academic demands of the university. The president, the university's chief executive officer, is appointed and delegated authority for institution operations by the Board of Regents. The president, with the approval of the Board of Trustees, appoints a provost who serves as the university's chief academic officer, a vice president for Administrative & Financial Services, and a vice president for Student Services. In addition, the administration also has legal counsel, an assistant to the president for university relations, a vice president for Advancement and Regional Services, and an executive director of enrollment management and admissions, each with their own staffs. The President's Council serves as the administration's executive management board.

Background

The administration is the upper echelon of the "executive branch" of the university's operations, acting under the purview of the Board of Trustees. The SUU Staff Association represents staff working for the administration. While the administration includes an extensive number of staff members and services, it is divided here into four critical parts: the president, the provost, Administrative & Financial Services, and Student Services. Finally, the President's Council has oversight for the university's entire administrative operations.

President

The president, the university's chief executive officer, serves as the key representative of the institution on and off campus. The president is chair of the President's Council. He or she, with the approval of the Board of Trustees, appoints a secretary, a treasurer, administrative officers, deans, faculty members, and other required professional and support personnel. He or she also determines their duties and salaries, except for administrative staff whose salaries are stipulated by the Board of Trustees.

He or she may provide the constitution, government, and organization of the faculty and administrative staff, including implementing university policy and establishing a system of tenure. He or she has power to authorize the faculty in determining the general initiation and direction of instruction, examination, admission, and classification of students. In all of these academic responsibilities, the president appoints and authorizes a provost, the chief academic officer.

Provost

The provost is the chief academic officer and also serves as the president's deputy for university supervision. He or she chairs the Deans' Council, sits on the President's Council, and meets with the Faculty Senate.

The provost governs matters relating to academic program; scholarly and creative efforts; service; and faculty, staff, and student outreach. The provost works with the Deans' Council, the Faculty Senate, department chairs, and vice presidents to oversee the quality of programs and faculty members. He or she works collaboratively with academic leaders to organize strategic planning, program development, management, assessment, and program reviews.

Additionally, the provost's office has administrative jurisdiction over the library, deans, academic support units, and information technology.

Administrative & Financial Services

Administrative & Financial Services is responsible for maintaining the university's financial health, physical facilities, and grounds. It includes Facilities Management, Human Resources, the Budget Director, Controller, Athletics Director, and Procurement Director. The vice president of Administrative & Financial Services heads this administrative division.

Student Services

Headed by the vice president for student services and the dean of students, Student Services encompasses all peripheral programs and activities, alongside the university's academic focus, designed to promote individual's growth, health, value, and enjoyment. Student Services includes and oversees the Bookstore, Career Services, Food Service, Housing & Residence Life, Outdoor Recreation, Student Activities, Student Involvement, the Student Support Center, and the Wellness Center.

President's Council

Also known as the President's Staff, the President's Council is the executive management board and has oversight for the university's entire administrative operations. Chaired by the university president, the council includes the provost, vice president for Administrative & Financial Services, vice president for Student Services, assistant to the president for university relations, vice president for Advancement and Regional Services, and others invited by the president.

The President's Council handles all recommendations concerning policy, budgets, and operations, including master planning and policy recommendations for the Board of Trustees.
