SUU Student AssociationOverviewThe SUU Student Association, SUUSA, is the official student organization to which all SUU students belong. SUUSA is funded by student fees and governed by student officials elected by the student body. SUUSA is organized into legislative, executive, and judicial branches and is responsible for representing students to the administration, providing student activities, and allocating SUUSA-controlled student fees to benefit the student body. BackgroundThe most recent incarnation of student government changed names along with SUU in 1991 to become SUUSA. In November 2003, a Constitutional Convention was held to reforge SUUSA's governing document. Most recently, a Student Bill of Rights was added. It was revised in January 2006. SUUSA elected and appointed officials must not be on social or academic probation or suspension and must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA. SUUSA elected and appointed officials are divided into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. LegislativeThe legislative branch consists of two houses: the Senate and the Clubs & Student Involvement Assembly. Senate: The academic vice president is the president of the Senate. Three senators from each of the six schools and colleges at SUU make up the Senate, which is the most powerful of the two bodies. The Senate approves all student fees within SUUSA itself and senators from each of the schools and colleges approve the allocation of course fees within the school or college they represent. Students may approach the Senate for funding of academic projects and programs, not for a tuition and fees subsidy. Students should contact the senators of their school or college. Assembly: The clubs and student involvement vice president is head of the Assembly. The Assembly consists of two representatives from eight categories -- academic development, arts and entertainment, athletics and recreation, professional development, Greek, service, support, and multicultural -- into which all registered student clubs and organizations are divided. The Assembly alone has power to allocate money appropriated to it to benefit student clubs and organizations. Clubs and organizations should contact the representatives of their specific category to request funding. ExecutiveThe executive branch is lead by the SUUSA President and includes the Executive Council, the President's Cabinet, and the Student Activities Board. SUUSA President: The SUUSA President is elected by the student body. He or she is a member of the SUU Board of Trustees, serves as the primary representative of SUUSA on and off campus, has power to veto legislation passed by the Senate or Assembly, and manages SUUSA's budgets and administration. Executive Council: The Executive Council is made up of the president, the academic vice president, the involvement vice president, and the activities vice president. The academic vice president both serves as the president of the Senate and sits on the Deans' Council. The involvement vice president serves as head of the Assembly and is responsible for providing leadership training for all on-campus student organizations. The activities vice president is head of STAB. Student Activities Board: STAB has no fixed number of members. It is responsible for organizing and producing all SUUSA activities, social and otherwise. It receives its own portion of SUUSA-controlled student fees. JudicialThe Judicial Council is made up of a chief justice and four associate justices, nominated by the SUUSA President and confirmed by the Senate, that serve until graduation, resignation, impeachment, automatic removal, or three years of service. The Judicial Council is the place for students to file grievances concerning elected members of SUUSA. It is also where student on-campus parking tickets can be fought. Links/Contact- SUUSA Website |
