- 10/24 – Second Congressional Debate with Chris Stewart (R), Jay Seegmiller (D), Jonathan Garrard (C), Joe Andrade (I), and Charles Kimball (I). The debate will be held in the Sterling Church Auditorium (Sharwan Smith Center) – 6-8 p.m. Utah Public Radio (UPR) will also be broadcasting this debate live from SUU.

Special Convocation featuring Bradley A. MacLean was held on March 24th:

Mr. MacLean is an attorney with the Tennessee Office of the Post-Conviction Defender which represents Tennessee death row inmates in post-conviction proceedings. Mr. MacLean was a partner in the Nashville office of the law firm of Stites & Harbison, PLLC (formerly Farris, Warfield & Kanaday) where he specialized in commercial litigation and bankruptcy law. He was first appointed to a death penalty case in 1990, and in 2007 he left the private practice of law to devote all of his time to death penalty litigation and related matters. Since 1991 he has served as an adjunct professor of law at Vanderbilt Law School where he has taught courses on trial advocacy and currently teaches a course on the death penalty. He has published articles on death penalty law and was a member of the American Bar Association’s Tennessee Assessment Team that wrote the Tennessee Death Penalty Assessment Report (March, 2007). He has been named to The Best Lawyers in America and Mid-SouthSuper Lawyers and has received other awards and honors, including the Nashville Bar Association’s Liberty Bell Award, the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Lionel Barrett Award for his work in the death penalty arena, and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty Legal Service Award. Mr. MacLean holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Stanford University, a M.A. in Education from Emory University, and a J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School where he received the Founder’s Medal for graduating first in his class.

The Michael O. Leavitt Center annual Distinguished Lecture was given this year by Former Secretary Michael O. Leavitt. Secretary Leavitt discussed health care reform and its impact. Thank you to all that joined us for the lecture.

Voters Choice Panel Featuring Multiple Third Party Candidates- Oct. 28th
The Michael O. Leavitt Center hosted a open discussion forum with third party candidates from the Libertarian and Constitution parties on October 28th at 12:00 P.M. in the Rotunda of the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
Gubernational Candidate Gary Herbert- Oct. 27th
The Michael O. Leavitt Center hosted a town hall style discussion with republican governor candidate Gary Herbert on October 27th at 3:30 P.M. in the Sterling Church Auditorium of the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
