Southern Utah University is very happy to announce record high numbers in donations and pledges at the end of 2007’s third quarter. With the University in the early stages of an ambitious capital campaign, the latest donor reports are just what the University needed to get a running start.

According to SUU’s Office of Advancement, responsible for spearheading University fundraising efforts, SUU raised nearly $11.5 million dollars from the first of January to the end of September 2007. This is higher than any other nine month funding period in the University’s history.

With contributions from across the United States, the school continues to strengthen its offerings to best serve its students and community.

SUU’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement Stuart Jones wishes to extend thanks to all those who’ve contributed both time and money in efforts to improve the University. States Jones, “We are deeply appreciative of the many generous alumni and friends who provide such wonderful support to the University.”

Regardless of the amount or purpose of each contribution, Jones emphasizes the impact such generosity has on the University, stating “SUU would not be where we are today without the enduring trust, confidence and support of our donors.”

Gifts of particular note coming in throughout the past nine months include $1 million from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation to create the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Endowed Chair. The Cline M. Dahle Foundation and Cline and Jane Dahle’s contributions also had a substantial impact on various initiatives, totaling $720,530 in contributions to help fund construction efforts on SUU’s Old Main, the Carter Carillon and create the Cline and Jane Dahle Scholarship at SUU.

Other donors who contributed to scholarship and endowments include Homer Jones, Arthur W. and Shirley M. Gardner, the Jane T. Doran estate and Jean Lopour. SUU alumnus Garrett Gunderson also donated $50,000 to help fund the Goo Goo Dolls the campus hosted as part of SUU’s Inauguration and Homecoming celebrations.

A substantial portion of the $11.5 raised over the past nine months will help provide increased scholarships for students. In addition, nearly $1.5 million was raised for SUU’s various academic departments and programming. Remaining donations went toward SUU Athletics, the Utah Summer Games, the Utah Shakespearean Festival and campus expansion efforts.
