Freeze your Buns, Run for Scholarships

Southern Utah University’s Education Talent Search will be hosting its fourth annual Freeze Your Buns 5K Run for Scholarships on Saturday, January 26, to raise funding for college scholarships for local high school seniors.

The event will include a 5K run, a one-mile walk and a Shivering Buns Run, a new addition for children 12 and under. The race will begin at Cobblecrest Park in Kanarraville at 11 a.m. In addition to racing in this admittedly freezing event, those who wish to support scholarships for local youth but who do not wish to run themselves may simply register as a ghost runner for the same race registration expense.

The scholarships generated by this annual event go directly to local teens who participate in the federal TRiO educational outreach program to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a higher education. For just a few dollars and a bit of shivering, southern Utah race fans have the chance to make a lasting impact on these young students.

According to Educational Talent Search (ETS) director Tauna Brandt, more than $2,800 was raised in last year’s Freeze Your Buns Run, which went directly to seven high school seniors.

Last year was so successful, in fact, that Brandt says ETS was able to broaden its reach to eight high schools in southern Utah this year.

Race registration is available online at raceit.com, keyword “Freeze Your Buns Run.” You may also print and mail a hard-copy registration form through suu.edu/ss/talent.

Runners interested in receiving a Freeze Your Buns Run t-shirt and goodie bag must register for the 2013 race by Tuesday, January 15, though registration will remain open through the morning of the race. Those who register after Jan. 15 will still receive a Freeze Your Buns Run t-shirt, but it will not be available until after the race.

Pre-registration for the 2013 Freeze Your Buns Run is $20 for adults and $12 for children aged 10 years and under. Registration fees jump to $30 for race-day registration; interested participants are encouraged to register online in advance.
