USG Set to Open 28th Annual Games with a Bang

This week marks the annual influx of thousands of athletes, young and old, from across the state onto Cedar City's fields and streets and across SUU's campus for the 28th annual Utah Summer Games.

At home on SUU's campus since its inaugural year, the Games is a longstanding seasonal tradition in southern Utah and across the state, drawing athletes from the toddling three-year old to the gray-haired 90-year-old, and ranging in skill and experience from amateur weekend warriors to semi-professional athletes who come from across Utah and neighboring states to test their mettle far beyond the competition within their own town or region.

Preceding any opening whistles for this year's competitive events, the Games will open with a bang when Recycled Percussion headlines the Utah Summer Games Opening Ceremonies on Thursday, June 13, in the Eccles Coliseum at 8:30 p.m. The junk band is currently the most popular interactive show on Las Vegas' famed Strip, following a quick rise to fame with a win on NBC’s 2010 season of America’s Got Talent. Taking recycling to the extreme with their use of used trash cans, ladders, barrels, pipes, and an assortment of pots and pans, and combined with an obvious talent for the musical as well as extreme, Recycled Percussion promises to bring all the fanfare and energy expected of an opening ceremony for the nearly 40 Olympic-style events that comprise the state's largest organized athletic competition.

In keeping with tradition and echoing the Olympic theme after which the Games were first modeled, this year's Opening Ceremonies will also feature the traditional parade of athletes, torch run and cauldron lighting, and fireworks that, alone, make for a night like no other in southern Utah.

The Opening Ceremonies have long been a seasonal highlight to near sellout crowds year after year. General admission tickets for the 2013 Opening Ceremonies, which are just $10 for adults and $7 for children ages 3-11, are now on sale through SUU’s Centrum Ticket Office at 435-586-7872 or online.

The 2013 Utah Summer Games will run June 6-30, with competition venues across southern Utah.
