No summer is complete without a juicy slice of watermelon, and believe it or not, you can nosh on a buffet of watermelon at this year’s annual Watermelon Bust for free, brought to you by SUU Athletics.

A celebrated community tradition, SUU Athletics is excited to bring the community and its athletes together with this special event, which will take place on the practice fields west of Eccles Coliseum—from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, with an afternoon full of free activities and all you can eat watermelon.

The event will cater to all ages, offering games and contests for kids as well as adults, including booths, prizes and drills with student-athletes from SUU’s football, volleyball, cross-country and soccer teams. Little T-Birds can mingle with the athletes, receive autographs and also meet Thor.

Though the celebration is simply to bring the campus and local communities together in support of Thunderbird Athletics as its student-athletes and coaches prepare for the 2013-14 season, the Watermelon Bust is also a great way to get to know the student-athletes.

Matt Roan, President Council’s fellow, said of the event, “The Watermelon Bust provides the perfect opportunity for us to engage our student-athletes with the community, in particular the elementary and middle school children who we hope to cultivate as some of our biggest Thunderbird fans.”

Roan added that the main purpose of the event is to create relationships between the student-athletes and community members.

He said, “It's important the student-athletes recognize they’re role models.  What you’ll see at the event is hundreds of kids with bright eyes looking up to their favorite cross-country runner or football, soccer, or volleyball player.”

The Watermelon Bust is free to the public and all are invited to come mingle with the student-athletes, participate in the many activities, eat free watermelon and join the Thunderbird Club.

SUU Athletics is also sponsoring Prime on the Sideline on Thursday, August 22 at 6 p.m.  at the Harris Center patio. The annual kickoff function, Prime on the Sideline offers attendees a chance to mingle with student-athletes and coaches, eat prime rib and enjoy live entertainment. This event is $25 per person and you must RSVP through SUU Ticket Office, (435) 586-7872.
