Blowing out summer in true Thunderbird Fashion, the Southern Utah University Student Association (SUUSA) is greeting students with six days of activities and events from a mentalist to a concert and even a paint dance as part of the 2014 Welcome Week.

Helping to acclimate all students to campus, from the skilled senior to the fledging freshman, SUUSA’s weeklong Big Summer Blowout is free, family friendly, interactive and most importantly, unforgettable.

Running from August 25-30, each day of Welcome Week will bring new activities at locations all across campus and even Cedar City to, as Madison Day, SUUSA vice president of clubs, stated “will help students connect with their city and set a precedence for how fun this semester will be."

The 2014 Welcome Week includes:

Monday, August 25

The wall-to-wall fun will begin Monday, August 25 with the annual BBQ on the Quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students are welcome to come to the Business Quad (between the Business Building and Library) between classes to enjoy free food and activities. Also, there will be a photo booth on hand to capture your first day of school.

The activities will continue that night with the screening of Captain America: Winter Soldier on the Practice Fields at 9 p.m. Bring blankets, pillows or even a couch to make yourself comfortable, but not too comfortable because alongside the movie is a frozen t-shirt contest. Anyone wanting to participate fold you shirt, dip it in water and then freeze prior to the event. Once you get there, you’ll be timed on how fast you can put the shirt on. Prizes will be given to the top fastest times. This event is open to the public.

Tuesday, August 26

The fun will continue with Open Rec Night at the Jay L. Sorenson P.E. Building, where all T-Birds can grab a ball, a harness or their swimsuit and have some fun. The entire building will be at your disposal, so get ready to play some ball. If you are new on campus, the P.E. Building has a rock wall, racquetball courts, a pool, and basketball and volleyball courts.

Wednesday, August 27

Religious leaders from across Cedar City will be coming together on the Multipurpose Quad (south of the Centrum Arena) to help students become informed about the different religious sects available for students to attend. Booths for each denomination will be set out and food for all will be available.

Thursday, August 28

Spreading the thunder past campus boundaries, Paint the Town Red will shut down Main Street from 6-9 p.m. bringing the entire Cedar City community a family friendly event with vendors and activities for all ages. Along with an opportunity to win prizes and score amazing deals from local businesses, including free massages and smoothies. Paint the Town Red will also feature the local Utah a capella group Eclipse at 7 p.m. on Main Street.

Friday, August 29

It’s the beginning of the semester and your mind is already whirling, but you’ll be taken on an even wilder wide with mentalist and illusionist, Wayne Hoffman. A favorite amongst college students, Hoffman will begin his show at 6-7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. Prepare yourself because he will know exactly what you are thinking. Students will be seated first for this event; if there is still available sitting it will open up to public.

Saturday, August 30

The culminating event is a campus favorite and will be a flurry of activity, and paint. The second annual Paint Dance will run from 8:30-11:30 p.m. on the Practice Fields west of the Eccles Coliseum. Wear white and be prepared to leave a different color then you came.
