Introduction

Linux, or rather what the word Linux implies, is an alternative operating system, simply stated, it replaces Windows or MacOS!

You may ask "Why would I want to replace Windows?" well, here is a list of reasons why moving to Linux is a good idea:

  1. Linux, and almost all of the software that runs on Linux, is free!(see About GNU below)
  2. Linux is Virus and spyware free, there is less than a .01% chance of getting a virus in Linux.
  3. Linux is Fast, and will run on old computers, if you have an old computer that you don't use anymore, give it new life!
  4. Linux is stable, system freezes are few and far between (if they ever happen!).
  5. Linux has great support, most of it is free!
  6. Linux makes you look cool, you will love showing off your 3D accelerated desktop.
  7. Linux can be what you want it to be, virtually every aspect of the Linux system can be customized to your needs, taste and style!

So how do I switch you say? Well there are a few options, as Linux is all about options! First you will need to chose a version of Linux, or as they are commonly called "distros". To take a look at most of the available distros visit Distrowatch.

Overwhelmed? Distrowatch tracks about 40% of the available versions, focusing on the larger ones, but to ease your search the SUUCC (SUU Computer Club) has a few recommendations, depending on how you plan on using your computer:

For beginner "desktop" users, (those who just want it to work):

We recommend a member of the Ubuntu family:

For setting up a server, you will want to look at exactly what the server will be doing, but we recommend looking at these versions:

And finially, if you want to learn as much as you can about linux and mold your computer to EXACTLY what you want it to be then we would recommend an "optomized" or "vanilla" distro:

Also feel free to contact the computer club for information and to find local businesses which specialize in migrating people to and support for Linux!

There is one more think I want to say about Linux, what makes Linux great is the community and the GNU philosophy, I don't have the room I would need to explain it all here, so check out a few of these pages to learn more:

If you have any questions, contact the SUUCC or log into SUUForums and post your question under Software.
