Engineering Week 2008 - February 19-22

Engineering Week was loads of fun!!! Thanks to all those who attended and especially to all those who helped make it happen! We look forward to seeing you next year!

Balsa Bridge Competition

Tuesday, February 19th - 10:00 am

Technology Bldg: Room 011


Bridge must be made strictly out of Balsa wood and Glue and must meet a 12" span and 2.5" width requirment. Bridge must not exceed a height of 24". Bridge will be simply supported at both ends and loaded mid-span with weight until failure. Bridges win based on the lowest ratio of bridge weight to supported load weight. Registration will take place between 9am and 10am the morning of the event.

Penny Float

Wednesday, February 20th - 3:00 pm

Sharwin Smith Center: Main Hallway


Each contestant will be provided with one square sheet of aluminum foil and one shot at making a structure to float as many pennies as possible without sinking.

Unlimited Pine Wood Derby

Wednesday, February 20th - 4:00 pm

Sharwin Smith Center: Living Room


First one down the track wins!!! Kits are optional and modifications are strongly encouraged!! Vehicles must remain on the track at all times and must not interfere with other contestant's vehicles. The following track and safety requirements apply to all entries:


  • Width: 3" (max)
  • Lenght: 12" (max)
  • Height: 6" (max)
  • Bottom Clearance: 3/8" (min)
  • Compressed or flamable substances will not permitted

This is your chance to really be creative and blow the competition away!

Water Rockets

Thursday, February 21st - 4:00 pm

Multipurpose Field


Rockets must be built using standard 1 or 2-litter soda bottles. Metal parts will not be permitted anywhere on the rocket. Rockets will be propelled using water and compressed air at 80 psi. Each contestant will be able to fill their own rocket with the desired amout of water prior to launch. Modification of rockets is allowed however any rocket deemed unsafe by the judges will be disqualified. The launcher and compressed air will be provided on site. To ensure the rocket can be connected to the launcher, nozzles must not be modified. Rockets must stand no taller than 4 ft.

Egg Launch

Thursday, February 21st - 4:00 pm

Multipurpose Field


Eggs will be provided on site, therefore, each entry must be able to have the egg inserted into them on site. Egg devices will be loaded into a catapult. The egg holding device must be able to fit into a 12" cube and the winning device will be the one that is launched the farthest without the egg breaking. Each Contestant will clean up their own egg.

Motorized Boat Races

Friday, February 22nd - 3:30 pm

SUU Pool: J.L. Sorenson Phys Ed Building


Each boat must be self propelled must remain in the water at all times. All "parts" of the boat must be firmly attached so they do not fall off in the pool. Additionally, any fluids used to motorize or control the boat must be contained and prevented from leaking into the pool. Maximum boat size is 15" wide by 24" long. The winning boat is the first one to make it across the width of the pool.

Banquet

Monday, February 25th - 6:00 pm

Sharwin Smith Center: Starlight Room


The Engineering banquet was held this year in the Starlight room of the Sharwin Smith Center. The cost was $12 per plate ($10 for students). Contest winners were anounced and we heard from our department chair, Dr. Burns and from Dean Bouniev of the College of Computing, Integrated Engineering and Technology. Scholarships were also awarded to three of our Integrated Engineering Students.

Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create the world that has never been.
