CONSTITUTION
|

|
Article I. Name and Purpose |
|||||
|
Section A. This organization shall be known as the Southern Utah University Graduate Student Association, hereafter referred to as the Association. The Association shall be the officially authorized student government of SUU Graduate Students and shall represent the interests of SUU Graduate Students. |
|||||
|
Section B. The Graduate Student Association of Southern Utah University is established (a) to provide a forum where matters of concern to graduate and professional students may be discussed, where opinions on actions and proposals of the University Administration and campus departments may be expressed, and where proposals of the Administration, departments and graduate groups may be initiated, and (b) to conduct programs and services of special interest to graduate students. |

Article II. Membership |
|||||
|
Section A. All post-Baccalaureate students of the SUU campus regularly enrolled or on filing fee shall become general members of the Graduate Student Association upon payment of required membership fees. |
|||||
|
Section B. Persons that serve or contribute to the Association may be declared honorary members by the Association. Honorary members shall have all privileges of membership with the exception of voting and eligibility for office. |
|||||
|
Section C. Active members of the Association shall be regarded as agents of Southern Utah University. Active members shall be entitled to protection for actions relating to official Association activities and duties under the University’s general liability. This protection is in force as long as the member meets the membership definition and they conform and comply with policies of Southern Utah University when engaging in Association activities. |

| Section D. The Association or any member acting on behalf of the Association shall not conspire to commit any act that causes or is likely to cause bodily danger, or physical or emotional harm to any member of the campus community. | |||||
| Article III. Non-Discrimination | |||||
| The Association prohibits discrimination or harassment of any person on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, pregnancy (including childbirth, and medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth), physical or mental disability, medical condition (including cancer-related or genetic characteristics), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship, or status as a covered veteran (covered veterans are special disabled veterans, recently separated veterans, Vietnam era veterans, or any other veterans who served on active duty during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized) in any of its programs or activities. The Association policy is intended to be consistent with the provisions of applicable University policy, State and Federal laws. | |||||

Article IV. Organizational Structure | |||||
|
Section A. Authority of the Association rests in the Executive Committee (Representatives). Any action of the Executive Committee is subject to the review and may be negated by a two-thirds majority vote of the Executive Committee. |

|
Section B. Representatives: The graduate students of each graduate program shall elect two Representatives.
|
|||||
| 1. Appointments and length of service of Representatives for each graduate degree program shall be determined by vote. All Representatives shall serve for a term of one year and are responsible for training their successor before leaving office. | |||||
| 2. Representatives may designate an alternate from among the graduate students in the program for the purpose of carrying out the duties of the Representative when the Representative is absent. The alternate must register with the Association in order to be recognized as an official alternate. | |||||
| The duties of the Representative shall be: | |||||
| 1. To provide a communications link between the students of each graduate program and the other graduate programs, the Association, SUUSA, and the deans and administration of the University. | |||||
|
2. To encourage participation and discussion by the students in the individual graduate programs. |
|||||
| 3. To undertake such business as it deems necessary to fulfill the purposes of the Association. | |||||
|
4. To ensure the constitutionality of all Association actions.

|||||
| Article V. GSA Faculty Advisor | |||||
| Section A. GSA Advisor must be a full-time faculty or staff member at Southern Utah University. | |||||
| The Advisor shall advise this organization and attend meetings and activities as necessary. Term shall be a minimum of one academic school year. | |||||
|

|||||
| Article VI. By-Laws to the Constitution | |||||
| Section A. The Executive Committee, by a two-thirds vote may establish, amend, suspend, or repeal By-Laws implementing the provisions of this Constitution. | |||||
| Section B. Any By-Law found to conflict with this Constitution shall immediately and thereafter cease to be valid and it shall be stricken from the By-Laws. | |||||
| Article VII. Powers | |||||
| Section A. The Executive Committee, by a three-quarters vote of its members, may interpret provisions of this Constitution. The Assembly may override any such interpretation by a two-thirds vote. | |||||
|
Section B. In the event of the dissolution of the Association, the assets of the Association shall be transferred to SUU Graduate Studies for the purpose of providing financial aid to SUU Graduate Students. |

| Article VIII. Amendments | |||||
| Section A. This Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote by the Executive Committee. | |||||
