Purpose: The Newman Club is a
Southern Utah University student organization
that provides
social activities, volunteer service, and exploration in the
Roman
Catholic
faith. It is open to all students, both Roman Catholics
and non-Roman
Catholics, as
well as to non-students.
Membership: Anyone who wishes to
become a member of the Newman Club
must register
with the faculty advisor. There is no eligibility requirement to
become
a member of the
Newman Club.
Newman Executive
Council: The
Newman Executive Council consists of
parishioners of
Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, the Newman Club faculty
advisor, and the
president, and vice-president of the Newman Club.
The Newman
Executive
Council is the official liaison between the Newman Club and the
Parish
Council of
Christ the King Church. The purpose of the Newman Executive
Council
is to supervise
and to assist the Newman Club in all of its activities, especially in
the guidance of
the students in the Roman Catholic faith.
Officers: There are two
student positions in the Newman Club: the president and
vice-president.
If needed, a secretary and treasurer or some combination
of these
two offices will
be formed. The following requirements applies to
the positions of
president,
vice-president, and, if created, the secretary and/or treasurer
of the Newman
Club: 1) to
maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5, and 2) to enroll
and to
attend as a
student at Southern Utah University no more than 18 semester
hours.
The Newman
Executive Council has the discretion to alter the roles
and responsibilities
of officers,
reduce or cancel financial assistance, and/or remove students from
their
office on the
following conditions: 1) the officer becomes academically
ineligible to
attend SUU, 2)
the officer engages in serious misconduct that brings disciplinary
action
from SUU and/or
Christ the King Church, 3) the officer voluntarily withdraws
from school,
and 4) the
officer fails to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of his/her
position.
Elections: Nominations for
these positions must be submitted to the Newman Executive
Council by
April 1. A primary run-off will occur after the 7:00 PM Mass on
the first Sunday
after April
1. The general election will occur after the 7:00
Mass on the second Sunday
after April
1. All outstanding matters concerning the election will
be determined at the
discretion of
the Executive Council.
Amendments and
By-Laws: All
amendments and by-laws to the constitution must be
passed by a 2/3
vote in the Newman Executive Council or by a 3/4 vote by
all eligible members
of the Newman
Club.
Effective:
This Constitution and By-Laws were ratified by an unanimous vote by the
Newman
Executive
Council on 03 April 2002. It will be effective until changed.
