History

The Newman Club was established and sponsored by the Christ the King Parish
under the director of Father Everett R. Harman (1955-65).  A "Newman Hall"
was added to the church building for the purpose of conducting regular religion
classes for college students.  After the time of Father Harman, the next identification
of the Newman Club on campus occurred in the 1979-80 school year, with 16
student members and Joe Larmoreaux as faculty advisor.

The Club was organized in April 1980 at the Church Hall, with a visiting priest from
Salt Lake City to help them.  The next year, Eric Houle and Pat Czarny, members
of the Newman Club, were respectively SUSC student body president and vice-president.
The club's candidate for Homecoming Queen won "Miss Talent SUSC."  The club
was one of the top fund-raisers for the March of Dimes, raising more than $4,000.

With the arrival of Father Michael J. Winterer, a separate mass was scheduled for students
each Sunday at 7:00 PM that was followed with social activities.  A scholarship fund was
established as well as Coffee House discussions and social and religious excursions for
Newman Club members.  The present faculty advisor for the Newman Club is Eric Houle,
with Melissa Buckley as the Parish advisor.
