The Society for Human Resource Management is the largest professional association in the U.S. devoted exclusively to the field of human resource management.
The Society is committed to the development of the human resource management (HRM) profession, and nowhere is that commitment more evident than in the student membership program.
The student program was created in 1965 to promote mutually beneficial interaction between HRM students and practitioners. SHRM membership offers student the opportunity to supplement their classroom education with real-world knowledge and hands-on experience.
Since the first chapter was chartered in 1965, the student program has continued to grow. The SHRM student membership program now includes more than 330 affiliated student chapters and more than 7000 student members.
Southern Utah University Student Chapter was initially formed in 1999. Lisa Jane Laird, a local professional member volunteered to start an student chapter in summer of 1999. Past professional members had tried, but had never had success with the faculty on campus. Southern Utah University is rather unique, having the departments of business, communication and psychology all offering classes to prepare students for various professions in HR. Lisa approached department heads Frain Pearson, John Groesbeck and John Ault and asked if they would mind if she started a student chapter and advised it. They all said they would support it, but did not have faculty to assign to it or assist at that current time. Lisa then tapped Shelly Lyman and Eric Batson to work with her. They were two students who had worked with Lisa in the past for HR internships. They advertised and announced an information meeting to form the club in October of 1999. They figured that if they had only 10 students come it would be a success; more than 30 showed up.
The following year Dr. Gerald Calvasina came to Southern Utah University to help the business department expand their HR courses. He took over the advisement of the club. His past experience as an advisor really showed. With a lot of work, the club was able to be nationally chartered Thursday, April 19, 2001. This chartering ceremony was held at the local professional chapter meeting.
