Becoming a Member of AUA:
There are five categories of membership - undergraduate
student, graduate student, university faculty, professional,
and honorary. The requirements for being invited to jooin
the honor society are as follows:
- The candidate must be a member
in good standing of the International Reading
Association
- Undergraduate Students
shall:
- have completed 5 semesters
of undergraduate study (76 semester hours of
coursework)
- be elected from the top 25%
of their class in scholarship
- shall have completed at
least one course in reading and/or language arts and
be recommended by a reading/language arts faculty
member in the institution
- Graduate
students:
- must be a major in the
field of reading and/or language arts, and be
recommended by a reading/language arts faculty member
in the institution.
- shall have completed a
minimum of nine semester hours in reading or related
areas of study
- shall have completed at
least half of the course work required for the
advanced degree
- shall have a 3.5 or higher
grade point average in all graduate work, and
particularly in the field of concentration
- Faculty (current or
alumnus):
- Major responsibility must
be in reading/language arts or a closely related
field
- Must have a Ph.D. or Ed.D.
or have met graduate GPA requirements if holding a
Masters Degree.
- Professional:
- Must be a current
elementary or reading/language arts secondary
teacher
- Must meet sholarship
requirements as defined above for highest degree
earned
- Must be elected to membership
by a favorable vote of the active members of the
chapter.
