Nursing lacks independence

This is the 28th year SUU’s Nursing Program has been a cooperative with Weber State University, and it is time SUU has its own program.
This is the only undergraduate program for which SUU relies on another university.
The professors are hired and paid for by Weber State University. SUU’s only role is to provide the classrooms.
SUU has been a university since 1991. We should not have to depend on another university for a program this important.
We understand that Weber’s Nursing Program is nationally accredited and having SUU’s program through Weber has been “very, very successful,” said Donna Lister, assistant professor of nursing.
We commend the program for its success but suggest taking the steps necessary for an independent program.
Not having to communicate with a school that is 500 miles away would be an advantage for SUU having its own program.
Nursing students would benefit from access to services on campus. Nursing students currently have to pay tuition through Weber. This means financial aid and other problems are dealt with over a long distance.
Can you imagine the frustration students would have when the problem solvers are at the other end of the state? SUU students already get frustrated dealing with those problems when the problems they are dealing with are at the same campus.
This would also be an advantage for the faculty in the Nursing Program. Instead of having to work with both Weber’s and SUU’s administrations, the faculty would only have to work with those at SUU.
Provost Abe Haraff has already proposed making the Nursing

Program independent of Weber. Lister said she has spoken with people at Weber State University and they are OK with SUU changing to its own program.
The steps to getting an independent program at SUU would take some time, but it would be worth the effort.
Lister said the program change must be approved by the Board of Regents and the State Board of Nursing. To be accredited, the SUU Nursing Program would need to write a new curriculum, unique to SUU, and then have a class of students graduate from the program.
SUU will be a stronger school when it is completely independent of other colleges and universities in Utah.
