Diaper Drive good chance
to help others
One of the Sunfest activities is a Diaper Drive from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. continuing today and Friday, sponsored
by the Service & Learning Center.
This is an excellent activity that gives students the
opportunity to help others in need.
Items needed are diapers, batteries, used cell phones,
floppy disks (used or new), crayons, children’s
books, fruit juices, baby food, postage stamps or monetary
donations.
Donations can be made at the Service & Learning Center
or in the raft, the USS Service, that will follow the
Sunfest activities.
Today, the raft will be on the Quad.
All donations will be given to the Family Support Center
or the Children’s Justice Center, said Pam Branin,
Service & Learning Center coordinator.
Both centers help children that have faced rough family
environments or other crises and provides a safe haven
for children, she said.
The Family Support Center provides a place for children
to go when they can be at home no longer, Branin said.
The Children’s Justice Center is a place for young
victims to be interviewed in a setting other than the
police station so the child is not so intimidated.
This is a great opportunity and time for students to make
donations.
The end of the semester is near, which means students
will be packing up to move apartments or go home for the
summer.
We suggest students and faculty should start tonight.
Students should go through their closets and find the
items the centers need.
The two centers are in grave need of these items, Branin
said.
“All state-funded agencies have suffered with the
budget and

the economy and are depending more and more on the generosity
of the community,” she said.
We especially like the idea for reusing old cell phones.
Instead of hanging on to old items, anyone who has an old
cell phone that is no longer being used can donate it. The
phones will be reprogrammed and given to families for use
in emergency situations.
“Some families don’t have phones,” Branin
said.
We urge everyone to spend a little time finding donations
or giving a little money to help organizations that help
Cedar City residents.
The opinion expressed above is the collective perspective
of the University Journal’s editorial board. The editorial
board meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Room 176D of the
Sharwan Smith Center. Visitors are welcome.
