Thunderbirds shoot low,
big final round helps out

The Thunderbirds shot a 290 in the first and last rounds of the Boise State Bronco Round Up, but a 301 in the second round cost SUU.
The ’Birds finished fourth at plus-17 881, 20 shots off the pace of team champion Boise State but just 11 shots behind second-place Weber State.
SUU and WSU were in a tie for second place after the first round at 290 but the second round was played over two days because of a frost delay Monday morning.
The final round 290 fired by the ’Birds was the best team score of the round but wasn’t enough to push the Thunderbirds into third place.
Idaho finished third at 879 in the 10-team tournament.
Idaho’s junior varsity finished fifth, followed by Utah State in sixth, Albertson College and Idaho State in a tie for seventh, Gonzaga in ninth and Montana State-Billings in 10th place.
Zach Johnson led the way for the Thunderbirds, who sent five sophomores to the tournament, with a three-round total of 218 (70-76-72) to finish in a five-way tie for 5th.
Taylor Edwards finished 15th for SUU at 221 (71-71-79) and John Mosier shot 222 (75-74-73) to finish third among the Thunderbirds and 17th overall.
Sophomore Kenny Ebalo finished in 22nd at 225 (74-80-71) .
Cameron Young finished a strong 39th at 231 (77-80-74).
“Our young guys played pretty well this week,” SUU Coach Richard Church said. “Zach had a great tournament and Taylor made the most of his first tournament of the year. We had a little trouble the second round but I liked the way we finished.”

“It’s tough to play a round over two days,” he added. “but we bounced back and played very well that last round.”
The Thunderbirds will head to the Cal State Northridge Invitational next, scheduled for Oct. 20-22.
