Students can study changes to constitution

We want to thank those who put their time and energy into preparing the revisions to the SUUSA Constitution. For their sake, we are sorry the revisions were voted down.
Several Constitutional Convention members were dedicated to improving SUU by enhancing the constitution and fixing the problems.
However, we believe it was a good thing that students voted down the revisions to the SUUSA Constitution because of the rush and pressure it put upon students.
We think that sense of rush was why students voted against the revisions. Students did not have the time to weigh the issues and changes on which they were voting.
Because the revisions were voted down, student representatives have the chance to scrutinize the improvements the Constitutional Convention recommended and make more improvements.
We suggest this begins during the summer and continues into the first couple weeks of school.
Then the SUUSA Senate should call a second Constitutional Convention.
Because the revisions were voted down, student leaders have the opportunity to debate the issues, especially whether C&O delegates are appointed or elected.
We believe the delegates should be elected to adequately represent all students, not just those in clubs.

We urge student leaders to conduct meetings for club leaders again.
However, the meetings need to be well advertised, not just on the SUUSA page of the University Journal, and should be advertised well in advance.
Meetings for the general student body should also occur. The student meetings should also be well-announced throughout campus and all Constitutional Convention members should attend.
Students have questions that need to be answered by those making the revisions.
This also allows student leaders the opportunity to inform the student body.
Every effort for student involvement needs to be made by SUUSA officials.
We hope the new SUUSA Senate will be as passionate about improving SUU and the SUUSA Constitution as the former senate was.
We also encourage students to seek out information about the changes.
Students should contact SUUSA officers to obtain a copy of the recommendations of the Constitutional Convention.
The University Journal pledges to publicize the process of revising the Constitution and meetings about the constitution again next year so students have another way to be informed.

The opinion expressed above is the collective perspective of the University Journal editorial board. The editorial board meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Room 172C of the Sharwan Smith Center. Visitors are welcome.
