Admission & Auditions

If you are interested in becoming a Music major, you must first apply and be accepted to Southern Utah University. An entrance audition with Music Department faculty must be passed before acceptance into a music program will be granted.  Applications for admission to SUU are available through the Admissions Office. You may find applications and similar information at the website www.suu.edu/you.

Perform two pieces of contrasting style (i.e. one technical, one lyrical). Symphonic Band or Orchestral excerpts are acceptable. Be prepared to play scales and sight read. Accompaniment is optional, but not provided. The audition will last approximately 10 minutes.


PERCUSSION

It is desirable for applicants to play a solo piece in the following catgories:

Mallets:  The selection should be chosen for musical content and technical difficulty (two-and four-mallet work is desirable).  Scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading may be required.

Snare Drum:  The selection should clearly demonstrate your level of technical ability.  Rudiments, including an orchestral roll, at all dynamic levels may be required.

Timpani:  The selection should utilize two or more drums.  Rolls with different dynamic levels on different drums should be demonstrated.  Intonation and sight-reading abilities may be tested.

Drum set and/or ethnic percussion is not required but may be included at the applican'ts discretion.

Perform two contrasting movements from the standard concerto or sonata repertoire such as Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, etc. Play scales and arpeggios in three octaves (such as in the Flesch or Galamian systems). Memorization preferred. Accompaniment is optional, but not provided. The audition will last approximately 10 minutes.

Perform two classical pieces of contrasting style (i.e. one fast, one slow) from memory. One musical theatre piece may be substituted for one classical piece. Accompaniment is optional. It is suggested you bring your own accompanist or accompaniment tape. The audition will last approximately 10 minutes.

Perform two or three prepared pieces from memory. Two different stylistic periods must be represented. Choose two (2) from the following list:

(A) Baroque (Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, etc.)
(B) Classical (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.)
(C) Romantic (Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, etc.)
(D) Impressionistic (Debussy, Ravel, etc.)
(E) Twentieth Century (Bartok, Copland, etc.)

Sight read two pieces of the following level:

(A) Easy Clementi Sonatina
(B) A Hymn
