Applied Percussion Study

Goals and Objectives of Private Study
The private lesson is an opportunity for the teacher and student to discuss concepts and fundamentals of music and percussion performance. The student should practice each assignment thoroughly during the week and come to the lesson having prepared the material to the best of their ability.

Attendance
There will be 12 regularly scheduled lessons during the semester. Only a valid medical excuse, emergency, or university event is an acceptable absence from a weekly lesson.

Written documentation (doctor’s note or email from student) must be presented for absences to be excused. In addition, the instructor should be contacted by phone or email prior to the scheduled lesson time. An unexcused absence from weekly lessons will drop your grade for the quarter by one letter grade. You cannot receive a passing grade for applied lessons if you miss more than three lessons during the semester.

Studio Class
Studio class will be held weekly. Attendance at studio class is mandatory. Each student is required to perform on at least two studio classes during the semester.

Percussive Arts Society (PAS)
Keeping informed of the latest developments in percussion is essential to your success as a professional musician and teacher. Therefore, membership in the Percussive Arts Society is strongly encouraged of all percussion majors.

Practice
Percussion music majors should practice a minimum of two hours per day. Percussion minors and non-majors should practice at least 1 hour per day. On average you will need to practice more than the minimum requirement to see a significant improvement in your playing.
