String Ensembles

Symphony Orchestra - The SUU Symphony Orchestra is open by audition to instrumentalists from the entire campus and rehearses five hours per week. This group of dedicated musicians performs orchestral masterpieces from the standard symphonic repertoire. Recent concert programs include Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakow, Concert for Oboe and Orchestra by Mozart, Finlandia by Sibelius and Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven. The ensemble performs each semester.

String Ensemble - The SUU String Ensemble is devoted to performances of string orchestra and chamber music literature of all periods. Recently students in the string ensemble performed string chamber works by I. Pleyel, Mozart, Beethoven and Shostakovich.

Applied String Studies - Private instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass are available for university credit to music majors and non-majors. Music performance majors present recitals in their junior and senior years. Music Education majors present a recital in their senior year. Music Minors are encouraged to give half recitals and all students are given ample performance opportunities through student recitals, masterclasses, workshops, and competitions. Lessons for music majors are one hour in length and constitute two hours of academic credit. Lessons for music minors are one-half hour in length and receive one academic credit.
