Jazz Ensembles                      Jazz

The SUU Jazz Ensemble is for any musician (music major or otherwise) who is interested in performing jazz music. Over the past several years, the SUU Jazz Ensemble has risen to new heights, performing music for professional jazz orchestras. We have consistently performed arrangements of many well-known Big Bands such as Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Maria Schneider, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Bob Mintzer, Gordon Goodwin, Pat Metheny and many others!

The centerpiece of the SUU Jazz program is the annual guest artist concerts, which bring professional jazz musicians to Cedar City. Past guest artists that have worked with the Jazz Band include Pete Christlieb, Tom Polett, and Bob Sheppard. For the 2012 Guest artist concert we are proud to announce Wayne Bergeron (lead trumpet for the Big Phat Band) will be performing with our students! This exciting opportunity gives our musicians experience with these professional level players that they would not have a chance to receive otherwise.

The SUU Jazz Band also performs an annual "Living Room" concert, as well as many fundraisers and other events. The group is serious about having fun and playing great music in the jazz idiom. The university offers a one credit course to the members of the ensemble. For more information on how to join the ensemble, or how to book the ensemble for a gig, contact Dr. Thomas Herb, thomasherb@suu.edu
