The SUU Wind Symphony offesr a musical evening that will touch the entire spectrum of human emotion

For Immediate Release: February 6, 2008

(Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah)  The SUU Department of Music will present the Mid-Winter Wind Symphony concertUnder the direction of Dr. Mark Stickney and guest conductor, Steve Shirts, the SUU Wind Symphony will perform Monday, February 25th at 7:30 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Center Ballroom on the SUU campus.

The evening will feature, A Hymn for the Lost and Living, by Eric Ewazen which was written about the attacks on September 11th. Ewazen was teaching at Julliard when the attacks happened. He writes, “A Hymn for the Lost and Living, portrays those painful days following Sept. 11, days of supreme sadness. It is intended to be a memorial for those lost souls, gone from this life, but who are forever treasured in our memories."

Vincent Persichetti’s Divertimento for Band, Op. 42, will also be featured.  Divertimento covers completely different moods and styles, a beautiful balance from the agitated woodwind figures and aggressive brass poly-chords in the first and last movements to the delicate and lyrical inner movements.

Seis Manuel, by Shelley Hanson, the third movement of her Symphony titled Islas y Montanas, is based on traditional song and dance form of the Jibaro people, peasant farmers of the mountains of Puerto Rico.  The musical evening will include Variations on a Korean Folk Song, by John Barnes Chance which is based on the Korean Folk Song “Arrirang”.

The high intensity Festivo by Czech-American composer, Václav Nelhýbel, will balance the musical evening.  In Festivo, Nelhýbel, one of the most productive composers of the 20th century, creates a tornado of explosive energy around a clear calm center linking the striking beginning and the brilliant finale.

Tickets are $6 for general admission, $4 for SUU Faculty and Staff, $3 for Students, and Free for SUU students with a valid I.D.  For tickets please call (435)586-7878.  Tickets are also available at the door.
