Scholarships & Financial Aid

In order to qualify for scholarships in the arts, students must apply for a scholarship through the SUU Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.

Southern Utah University offers a variety of scholarships through the university as well. We recommend that students also apply for general leadership and academic scholarships offered through the university. For more information on these types of scholarships and specific deadlines, contact the SUU Financial Aid Office directly.

If you would like to audition or interview for a departmental scholarship, please call our office Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm at (435)586-7746.

Dance Audition Dates will be held on:

  • Saturday, February 23, 2008: 10:00 a.m., Multipurpose Studio 116

Theatre Arts Audition and Interview Date will be held on:

  • Saturday, February 23, 2008, Auditorium 108

Students selected to receive scholarships will be notified by April 15th. In order to qualify for a scholarship, students must enroll as full-time theatre arts or dance majors. Students on departmental scholarships must maintain a 3.0 accumulative grade point average and departmental scholarships must be renewed each year. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the department to arrange for an interview or audition at (435)586-7746 or through the Theatre Arts and Dance Departmental Secretary.

Application for Scholarship, Placement Audition, and Interview

You will need to complete an audition application form  Dance scholarship form or Theatre scholarship form and schedule an audition time through the Theatre Arts and Dance Departmental Secretary. Your application form must be returned to the department a minimum of 1 week prior to the audition date.  You may return the form by either downloading the PDF, completing it, saving it and emailing it to Kristina Stevenson at stevenson@suu.edu ; print and fax it to (435)865-8568; or mail it to SUU-Theatre Arts & Dance Scholarship    351 W University Blvd.   Cedar City, UT  84720.

Students who live an extended distance from Cedar City, UT may submit an audition video.   Contact the Department of Theatre Arts & Dance directly for audition requirements and to verify if you qualify for this option.

THEATRE ARTS AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Acting/Directing/Education Focus

  • Current Headshot
  • Current Resume
  • 2 Contrasting Monologues (not to exceed 3 minutes collectively)
  • *Optional: 1 singing selection (not to exceed 1 minute. Please bring your own accompaniment. A CD/Tape player and piano will be provided.)

Design/Technical/Management Focus

  • Resume
  • Portfolio

Video Audition Requirements

  • Current Headshot
  • Current Resume
  • 2 Contrasting Monologues (not to exceed 3 minutes collectively)
  • *Optional: 1 singing selection (not to exceed 1 minute)

DANCE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Audition requirements for dance scholarships are the same as placement auditions. The process includes:

  • Two technique classes (ballet and modern dance)
  • A one minute solo (choreographed by the student applicant)
  • An interview with the dance faculty

Departmental Assistantships

The Theatre Arts & Dance Department offers our students the unique opportunity to apply for an assistantship to work within the department.   In order to apply for an assistantship, you must submit a FAFSA application to see if you qualify for federal work study funding.   You can do this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Assistantships with the department range from Scenery & Costumes to Marketing & Box Office.  If you are interested in an assistantship in the Scene Shop (scenery, lighting, audio, props, paint) you must have successfully completed the THEA 1513 Stagecraft course or transfer equivalent.  If you are interested in an assistantship in the Costume Shop you must successfully have completed the THEA 1523 Costume Construction course or transfer equivalent.  You may download the application form.
