SUU Student Wins National Scholarship

Steven Yardley of Beaver, Utah was selected as the overall scholarship winner of a $1500 scholarship from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the National Cattleman’s Foundation (NCF).  Over 200 students from across the nation applied for 20 scholarships offered by the CME and NCF.  As the overall winner, Steven was awarded an all-expense paid trip to the 2006 Cattle Industry Annual Convention and Trade Show held in Denver, February 1-4.  Each applicant submitted a 750 word essay on a current issue facing the beef industry.  Steven presented a portion of his essay at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Awards luncheon on February 4.  His essay explored the issue of private property rights and its impact on cattle producers.

Steven is a sophomore in the Agriculture Program at Southern Utah University.  He is the son of Gib and Denise Yardley.  Steven was a former State FFA Officer, serving as Vice President in 2001-2002.  Steven married Leslie Oberg from Genola, Utah who was also a former State FFA Officer, serving as Secretary during 2002-2003.  They have one son, James Gilbert born October 20, 2005.
