Geology in Southwestern Utah and Southeastern Nevada

Participants will study the stratigraphy, sedimentology, and structural geology as it relates to the history and development of the Colorado Plateau - southern Great Basin region. Rock units range from high grade Precambrian (1,700 Ma) metamorphics through Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks and Cenozoic volcanics. A large variety of geologic structures and volcanic features are exposed. Simple geologic mapping will be introduced. 

High School students who have completed an Earth Science course, will be a senior in 2004-05, and are interested in pursuing a career in the geosciences are invited to apply to participate in this three-hour undergraduate level field geology experience. The Division of Geosciences at Southern Utah University will offer this weeklong geology based camping experience August 8-14, 2004.

Course Requirements: Participate in the week long field experience. Maintain a field journal to be submitted along with a typed report about the field experience within three weeks of the completion of the experience ( September 7, 2004 ).
