1) ArcView 3.x Import:
Importing with ArcView 3.x is completed with an import utility.
To start the import utility:
Click on the start menu Choose programs Choose ESRI Choose ArcView3.3 Choose Import 71
Results: ( start_arcview_import71 )
When importing from ArcView 3.x you have a choice of either importing a single or double precision coverage as well as additional options as needed. See the ArcView help index and search for ‘importing’ to help decide which version to use or once the import utility starts you can choose help and the same information will be available.
Usually it is safe to use the import71 option 98% of the time and let the utility decide what is best. If file storage space or a version critical coverage is a concern you might need the other option (command line import with ArcView import will not be covered in this exercise).
Alternatively, if the e00 interchange file has been associated to the import71 utility executable program you will see an ESRI Icon adjacent to the e00 file similar to the following:
Results: ( import_icon )
If this is true, on your system you can double click the file to start the import71 utility. (This exercise will not cover the method to create a file association on the operating system)
When the program starts you will see the Import71 Utility dialog box.
Results: ( import71 )
Choose the “Browse…” option next to the “Export filename” input box and navigate to your workspace, then choose the aocbo.e00 file.
Results: ( import_browse )
NOTE: If you have not downloaded this file from AGRC you will need to do so before continuing. See the download files section above.
Once you have chosen the aocbo.e00 file click ‘Open’.
In the “Output Data Source” section you can either choose browse or type the location and name of the output file. You can choose to rename the file, and at the same time, send the output to a different location. Notice that we placed the output coverage in the same directory, but we renamed the file utco24k. The following graphic shows this option:
Results: ( import_OK )
If your Import71 Utility dialog box entries are satisfactory click OK. When the import process is complete a small dialog box will appear. Dismiss the box and the process is complete. This coverage can now be used in ArcView, ArcGIS, or ArcInfo.
Let’s take a quick look at what we got. Start ArcMap, choose the add data button (the black plus sign), when the Add Data dialog box appears navigate to your workspace and select the coverage you just imported. In our case the file name is utco24k. Then select the “Add” button from the Add Data dialog box. The following results should be similar:
Results: ( arcmap_utco24k_imported )
Alternatively you could view the imported file in Arcview 3.x
