Finding 1:24k soils data with the SGID:
To specifically find out which file has the soils data, use the SGID User’s Guide at the following site: ( http://agrc.utah.gov/agrc_sgid/sgiddata/sgid_user_guide.pdf ). Search for ‘soil’ with the find option (binoculars) and make sure the files are at the scale 1:24,000. You will find that the file name is LCSOI and the data can be found in the QD024 directory.
Navigate your web browser to the AGRC SGID FTP site ( ftp://ftp.agrc.state.ut.us/sgid/ ) and choose the QD024 folder. (Optionally you can choose the directory header "QD024 – 7.5-Minute Quadrangles – 1:24,000", and this will take you to the sgid folder QD024.)
You will be presented with a fairly large list of folders. The folders are named after the AGRC quadrangle grid names (see AGRC grid naming convention for further information ).
From the above list we know the names of the directories we need. By scrolling the horizontal bar find the first directory in our list (i.e. Q3040). When you have found this directory double click on it and you will see a listing of files:
Results: ( q3040_file_list )
Notice that the soils file that we need is in this list (LCSOI) along with other files. Take a few minutes and use the SGID User’s Guide to find what type of data each file name represents. You also might want to look back at the section entitled; ‘AGRC SGID GIS data file naming convention:’.
After searching for file names, you will find that some represent hydrology and others transportation and others utilities or reference systems or land cover.
Questions: Using the SGID User’s Guide and list the description for each file in the Q3040 directory.
