Exercise: LaSal Mt. Soils |
|||
|
-- Sidetrack-- Creating An ESRI Coverage:
Later in the exercise we will need the LaSal Mt. section as a separate Arc/Info coverage, so it is easier to extract and convert it at this point.
To do so; make sure that only the LaSal Mountain section is selected then right click on the ‘glphy polygon’ layer and choose ‘data’ then ‘Export Data … ‘.
Export the selected features using the layer coordinate system. Call the new shape file ‘lasalmtbndry’ and place this in a new directory called ‘lasalmt’, in your workspace. (Use the ‘New Folder’ icon option in the saving data dialogue box to create the new directory)
Results: ( glphy_arcmap_exportdata )
If your dialogue box is correct choose the OK button.
Do not add the exported 'lasalmtbdry' coverage to the map as a layer?
Leave ArcMap open (do not close ArcMap), start ArcCatalog and open the 'lasalmt' folder in your workspace to look at the results of the export to a shapefile.
Results: ( glphy_catalog_results )
ArcMap would not let us convert the selected features directly to an Arc/Info coverage. To do so, right click on the lasalmtbndry.shp file from ArcCatalog, then choose ‘Export,’ then choose the ‘Shapefile to Coverage …’ option.
Results: ( glphy_catalog_ex2cov_menu )
In the ‘Shapefile to Coverage’ dialogue box accept all the defaults (verify that the output feature class is poly) and call the output coverage 'lasal_mt' and place it in the lasalmt directory.
Results: ( glphy_catalog_export2cover )
This coverage will be used in the next section when appending and clipping to the LaSal Mountain area.
