Technical Issues:
Software Requirements:
To complete the exercises you will need to have access, at one time or another, to the following software: Windows NT, 2000 or XP (Windows 95 or 98 users will not be able to do the ArcGIS or Arc/Info portions of the exercises), Windows Explore, Internet Explore or another web browser with a live link, Word Processor, Adobe Acrobat Reader, ArcView 3.x, ArcGIS 8.x with the Arc/Info floating License or ArcView floating license product (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolBox), Arc/Info workstation 7.1 or higher.
Software Work around options:
If you do not have the ArcGIS 8.x ArcInfo license Desktop, there are enough screenshots to follow the process, but you will not be able to actually complete the exercise. The ArcGIS ArcView license is sufficient for the first exercise. Most Arc/Info command line sections in the exercises are optional. There are four ArcView 3.x work around exercises for those that do not have ArcGIS with the ArcInfo floating license. The work around exercies do not have screen captures. All of the questions throughout the exercises can be answered without the GIS software, but you will need internet access and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Exercise Data:
All the exercise data is acquired during the exercise. It is suggested that you follow the exercise step by step to acquire these data. There are five files required to complete the exercise (aocbo.e00, glphy.e00, index_24.e00, index_100.e00, and index_250.e00). If for some reason you are not able to download the files refer to the exercise data page. You will need some type of uncompressing software like WinZip. At the beginning of the Acquiring GIS data exercise you will be required to have the C:\esri\esridata files that come with ArcView 3.x.
Screen Properties:
The exercises were created with a screen setting of 1024x768. If your settings are 800x600 the images will be larger and you will need to scroll at times to see the complete image. It is not recommended to use a screen setting less than 800x600.
Image files:
All images that are used in the exercise are jpg files. The sizes range from 4KB – 177KB. The screen shots were captured with a screen setting of 1024x768. Some images will require the complete desktop for viewing or scrolling to see the complete image.
Linked Browser:
The exercises were designed in a web environment in order to provide an easy format for linking to multiple images. Each image or link will open in a new web browser. The linked image web browser should be closed after viewing. To prevent multiple copies of Internet Explorer running at the same time and to reduce confusing be sure to only keep open the exercise web browser and only the immediate information pages.
Desktop Setup:
There will be times that you will be working on line with an additional web site(s) during this exercise. The design of the exercise web pages are such that they can be narrowed in width and moved off to the left of the screen. This enables you to read the exercise and scroll through them using a smaller amount of desktop space. In a few cases there are some tables that prevent you from narrowing the web browser past a certain point before text start to run off the screen.
Browser Testing:
The web design was completed with Microsoft FrontPage and tested with Microsoft Internet Explorer. There were no tests of Netscape or other web browsers. Sorry if this cause problems, see the contact section below.
Connection Speed:
Internet connection speed was only tested with a T1 line. For the linked images, the largest image size is 177KB. Image viewing will be slower with a modem. It is not recommended to use less than a 56k modem. With 56k modem some images will take 20 seconds or more to load.
