GPS Theory, Techniques and Methods

 (Global Positioning Systems)  PREREQUISITE: consent of instructor

Priority is given to fieldwork and hands on time with GPS units. The topics will vary according to the demographics of the students signed up for the class.  Topics will range from GPS history and theory, How GPS works, Differential GPS, navigation and field collection techniques.  (Spring $30.00 lab fee)

GEOG 3115 Earth from Space: Introduction to Remote Sensing Lab 1 credit

Principles of remote sensing with emphasis on application of photographic, infrared, radar, and other imagery from aircraft and satellites. An interdisciplinary approach. Co-requisite: GEOG 3115 (Spring, odd years)

Principles and techniques of cartography, including perception, direction, scale, grids, projections, spatial data analysis, data manipulation, color theory and application, and principles of cartography design. (Fall, alternate years, next taught in Fall 2003) (3510 has a lab fee)

PREREQUISITE for GEOG 3560: CS 1000 or ISA 1050 or consent of instructor

Fundamental concepts and uses of GIS as a problem solving tool for spatial phenomena.  Lab will focus on the use and application of ESRI Arcview/ArcGIS 8.x software. (Fall, $30.00 lab fee)


GEOG 3990

GIS Undergraduate Research

2-8 credit

Laboratory and/or field course centered on helping the student conduct meaningful and novel research.  Directed research and techniques used will be discussed.  This course may be repeated for variable credit.  Prerequisites: Open to qualified students by permission from instructor.  Dean/Chair and Registrars approval for grade is needed. (Taught Fall/Spring as needed, $15.00 fee per credit hour)


GEOG 4150

Advanced GIS Analysis Methods Lab

3 credit

PREREQUISITE: GEOG 3550 and 3560, Math 1040 or consent of instructor

Advanced GIS course. Conceptual and technical problems associated with developing a cartographic thematic database using vector GIS software tools. Concepts, techniques, and applications in using vector-based GIS as a tool for geographic  analysis. (Spring, $45.00 lab fee)


GEOG 4920

  GIS Workshops  

1-3 credit

PREREQUISITE: consent of instructor  (Fall/Spring as needed, $15.00 fee per credit hour)

 

A group of students (4-10) must request, by a written proposal, to participate in one of these workshops.  When approved, the workshop is designed around the the students interest and skill levels.  The request, approval and design must be completed before finals the semester prior to taking the course.

 

Remote Sensing Research:  The student will be using state of the art software and hardware to learn remote sensing theory and procedures as it relates to GIS and Environmental planning. The lab will take advantage of the ERDAS Imagine, Essential and Professional package software. 

Applied GeoStatistics:  Covers Univariate and bivariate descriptions as well as spatial descriptions.  Students will work with sample data sets for interpolation and extrapolation. IDW, Spline and Kriging will be used for surface creation.  In addition students will be using the latest version of the ESRI GeoStatistical Analyst software.

ArcObject Programming with VBA:  A prerequisite of visual basic is required before a student can participate in this workshop.  ArcGIS customization and creating user interfaces for modeling GIS data is the focus.

Python Scripting: This workshops will cover the concepts of automating the geo-processing task within the ArcGIS Desktop environment.  It is recommended that a student has some experience with programming before taking this course.

Crime Mapping and Analysis:  This workshop was specifically designed for the criminal justice major and focuses on research in using GIS and crime mapping

Extending the ArcGIS Desktop: Working with the ESRI ArcGIS Extension, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, ArcScan, Network Analyst, Publisher, Tracking Analyst,  also ArcExplorer, ArcReader

Advance Studies in GIS Topics:  Example topics include: ArcIMS, SDE, Oracle, Autocad Map 3D, Business Map, ArcView3.x, ODBC, SQL, ArcObjects, Survey Grade GPS, and Remote Sensing, GIS job market research, geotechnologies


GEOG 4500

GIS Research Project

3 credit

PREREQUISITE: GEOG 4150 or consent of instructor

This is a required course for all students that are planning on receiving the GIS certificate.  The student is required to use the skills that he/she has developed in GIS analysis to complete a project of choice. The student project must be pre-approved by the GIS committee 2 semesters prior to signing up for this course.  See the syllabus for a detailed breakdown of requirements.  ($45.00 lab fee)


GEOG 4893

GIS Internship

2-8 credit

PREREQUISITE: consent of instructor  ( $15.00 fee per credit hour for on campus internships)

Students that are interested in a career in GIS or some related area are encouraged to seek an internship in an area of interest.  SUU GIS lab has several cooperation and agreements with several state and federal agencies that are willing to help students learn GIS skills.  Internships vary according to interest.  Some internships are volunteer and others are paid positions.  The student is require to submit a request letter to the GIS committee to participate in an internship.  The letter should outline the specific projects they will be working on during the internship.  If employed, the letter must be signed by the employer.   For each 1 credit of internship a 5 page paper is required.  The students are encouraged to keep a journal.
