Exercise Setup:  Technical Issues

Some links are currently broken with the recent change  to NAD83 at the AGRC site.

Please be patient for the upgrades. The SGID is no longer available in NAD27 on the FTP site.

In the following exercise you will be acquiring a variety of GIS data sets in order to become familiar with transferring data from one location to another.  Along the way, information will be shared that will help you understand how popular GIS datasets are stored, found, transferred, and converted in order to be used in an ESRI GIS mapping software.  This exercise assumes a basic knowledge of GIS and some familiarity with the ESRI ArcGIS desktop environment and the ESRI ArcView software.  In addition to this exercise, there are examples that will provide information that you can use to integrate with the ESRI Arc/Info command-line environment.

Where necessary, terms and procedures will be clarified.   This exercise is designed to flow from beginning to end and involves a fair amount of interaction with various software packages.  However, after completing the exercise one can return to the various information sections for reference.

The interactive portions of the exercise are shown in green.  These are steps that must be completed by you.

There are multiple screen shots of the software and procedures that are linked throughout the exercise.  Most screen shots are used to verify that you are where you should be and/or that your procedure is setup correctly before executing.

The intention of this exercise is to provide the user information, knowledge and how-to skills.  The user will become familiar with finding, transferring and converting various forms of GIS data in order to bring them into an ESRI GIS software environment.

Before you continue you will need to create a new directory called ‘agrc_data’ in your personal workspace for this exercise.
