Seminar Title: Advanced Sport Conditioning Seminar
SEMINAR TOPICS: Periodization of Training for Sport Conditioning This seminar will cover recent advances in varying training programs throughout the year for a variety of athletes. It will include practical steps for coaches to make alterations in training programs on a year round basis with particular focus on multi-sport athletes. Optimizing Training for Strength Development This seminar will include research on the amount of work needed to elicit maximal strength gains. Coaches will receive information about designing high volume training programs that can be completed in a short period of time. Signs of overtraining will be discussed with strategies for dealing with such a situations covered. Transfer of Training to Sport Performance Sport-specific training is a concept that has been followed by elite athletes for many years. Incorporating such training into a conditioning program for high school athletes can provide a definite advantage. Research examining the effectiveness of a variety of training aids will be discussed. Coaches will learn which training methods have demonstrated the most effectiveness for enhancing sport performance. Creatine Supplementation and Athletes Information regarding creatine will be discussed. Specific information regarding benefits and risks, proper supplementation strategies, and physiological connections between creatine supplementation and sport performance will be presented. This session will provide coaches with the information they need to share with athletes and parents who may have questions about this supplement.
Biographical Information Dr. Matthew Rhea, an alumnus of the SUU "Coaching Factory", completed a PhD at Arizona State University in exercise science. He has completed and published over 20 studies on a variety of exercise and sport science topics. He has presented at national and international conferences, including main session lecture s at the National Strength and Conditioning Association conference (2003 , 2004) and a presentation at the International Olympic Committee's World Congress on Sport Sciences in Athens, Greece (2003). He was the only American invited to the World Congress to lecture on strength and power development. His research on strength and power development and sport-specific training has been labeled "historic" by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. While at Arizona State University, Dr. Rhea was asked to serve as a consultant to Athletes ' Performance, one of the leading sport conditioning facilities in the world. There, Dr. Rhea conducted research on some of the most elite athletes on the planet. He designed training programs for speed, power, sport-specific metabolics, agility, and functional movement. Gaining access to such an elite population of athletes is virtually impossible and very few have ever had such an opportunity. Notable athletes who trained at Athletes' Performance include:
Dr. Rhea is currently serving as a consultant to the Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Supersonics, and Seattle Storm and in the development of speed, power, and metabolic conditioning programs.
