Thank you for your interest in Southern Utah University's English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, a part of the School of Continuing & Professional Studies. We have a lot to offer ESL learners, including flexible start dates, experiential learning, and integration of technology into the curriculum. We welcome students from many countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia, China, and Korea. We are located in Cedar City, Utah, which is a fabulous community to live and learn in.
Our ESL program is structured in six terms that are seven weeks long. This provides flexible admissions dates to applicants. The tuition cost is $1,800 per seven-week term. Housing options currently include university housing, local apartments, and (on a limited basis) Homestay with local families.
In 2013, we will feature learning communities which immerse English Language Learners in rich experiences that build fluency. Additionally, following the institution's commitment to Experiential Learning, the ESL program will incorporate real-life experiences into its learning activities in mid-2013. In late 2013, we will begin integrating iPads into classroom activities.
Many of our ESL students improve their English language skills through our program, and then apply for undergraduate admissions at Southern Utah University to become a full time, degree-seeking student. We offer a bridge program to assist students in the transition from the ESL Program to the university. Applying for undergraduate status at SUU requires that international applications pass the IELTS (with 6.0) or TOEFL (with 525 on the paper test, 197 on the computer based test, or 71 on the internet based test) before admission as full-time students.
We are much more than textbooks and papers. The university setting provides opportunities for ESL students to learn English outside the classroom. ESL students may join any of the hundreds of student clubs and organizations, use the fitness facilities, and participate in other activities in and outside of Cedar City. Our crown jewel is the Utah Shakespeare Festival that takes place every summer. Cedar City is close to many national parks that attract visitors from around the globe. The Brian Head Resort ski area and Las Vegas are also within driving distance of Cedar City
Please contact us with any questions you have, and consider joining us in Cedar City to take advantage of our excellent program.
Sincerely,
Dr. Andrea Stiefvater
Director
