The SUU K-12 Professional Development program provides credit for in-service school teacher courses in Utah and Nevada. Courses are taught by school districts, not SUU.

The courses we provide credit for are divided into two categories: endorsement courses and professional development courses.

Endorsement Courses

Endorsement courses are developed by qualified faculty at Southern Utah University, observing state of Utah requirements. School districts seeking to offer these courses must use and closely adhere to SUU syllabi and content. SUU credit is conferred only under these conditions.

Professional Development

Professional Development courses are developed and taught by the school district (or school) and offered in dozens of different topics, many of which are cutting edge.

Type of Credit

All professional development courses and some endorsement courses are transcripted with a course number of "5xxx." The credit generated by these courses is typically used for recertification points and in some districts as lane change credit. How the 5000-level course credits are used is strictly up to the school district as SUU makes no promise that this type of credit will be accepted anywhere or for any purpose. Some endorsement courses grant credit at the 6000 level.

SUU Masters of Education Opportunity

With prior approval of the director of the M.Ed. program (Tom Cunningham), 5000 level courses that lead to a Utah State Office of Education endorsement may be accepted as elective credit in the SUU Masters of Education program (up to 12 credits). Sweet deal at $23 per credit!

General Guidelines

The basic guidelines to offer a course for SUU credit include:

• Must include 15 hours of *contact time for each credit requested.
• Lead instructor must have a masters degree, and experience relevant to course topic. For endorsement courses, lead instructor must have a masters degree in the field of course topic.
• Syllabus must clearly demonstrate substantive learning will be demonstrated, by substantive assessments and grading rubrics.
• All proposals should be submitted by email: k12inservice@suu.edu.

Pricing

(2013 is first time in 15 years we have changed our pricing).

• General Professional Development courses (Utah and Nevada districts): $21 per credit.
• General Professional Development courses (Outside Utah and Nevada): $28 per credit.
• Endorsement courses: $23 per credit.

Proposing a Course

To request consideration of SUU credit for a course, please carefully follow these guidelines.

1. Pre-approval is required before you offer a course for SUU credit.
2. Download the course proposal checklist and carefully follow requirements.
3. Send proposal in Word [.doc] format by email to: k12inservice@suu.edu.
4. When a decision is made you will be contacted. For approved proposals we send course index and number, and instructions for registration procedures.
5. Approval duration for general professional development is one calendar year, in which time the course may be offered an unlimited amount of times (assuming no course/instructor changes are made). For endorsement courses, approvals must be sought each time the course is offered, to ensure SUU compliance with state standards.

Computer-Interactive Courses

Virtual Education Software, Inc. (VESI) is a third-party provider of that offer computer-interactive courses, which Southern Utah University recognizes for 5000 level credit upon. Credits for VESI courses are not applicable toward any master's degree at SUU.

For information contact VESI at 1-800-313-6744, or on the web: http://www.virtualeduc.com/southernutah/. VESI will provide instructions for registration and payment. Upon completing the course, VESI will provide instructions for applying for credit from Southern Utah University. SUU charges a $25-per-credit recording fee; this is a separate fee from the cost of the course paid to VESI.
