Call to Order
Meeting was called to order by Earl Mulderink at 12:10 PM. In attendance: Lisa Assante (BUS), Steve Barney (HSS), Pam Branin (CSD), Briget Eastep (EDU), Jeff Hanson (PVA), Karl Stevens (SCPS), and Lacie Jo Juber (Student). Excused: Scott Hansen (CIET), Terri Hildebrand (SCI), Matt Nickerson (LIB & Honors Program). Guests: Wes Curtis and Brian Cottam of SUU’s Office of Regional Services.
Approval of Minutes
Minutes for meetings of February 27, 2008, and March 26, 2008, were reviewed and approved.
Earl Mulderink acknowledged that this meeting was the committee’s last of the year, and he thanked all committee members for their efforts. He invited everyone to today’s Faculty Student Scholarship Recognition event at 5 PM, at which five new Service-Learning Fellows would be recognized. He urged committee members to attend the “Thank You Reception” sponsored by Pam Branin and the Service & Learning Center. Earl mentioned a forthcoming UCC-sponsored meeting at Westminster College, June 4-5, 2008, along with the planned conference on international service-learning at UVU, October 2-3, 2008.
In addition, Earl discussed potential publication venues for faculty, and he distributed articles and resources that included “More Colleges Make Consumer Information Public” (USA Today, April 7, 2008) and Reflection Activities (Miami Dade Community College). In offering “kudos, awards, and thank-you’s,” Earl acknowledged this year’s UCC nominees for engaged educator, student, and community partner; these were: Engaged Scholar, Dr. Lisa Assante; Civically Engaged Student, Dane Hess; and Committed Community Partner, Jesus Manuel Rabago Parra of La Palma, Mexico. Earl distributed copies of a memo and grant report from Dr. Cynthia Wright who had received a mini-grant of nearly $500 for a water-sampling service-learning project in Mexico. Earl noted upcoming deadlines for the Provost’s Newsletter and mentioned planned meetings with Provost Rod Decker (on April 23, 2008) and SUU’s Capital Campaign team (on April 28, 2008).
B. Other Reports
Pam Branin mentioned that Lisa Assante was selected as the T-Bird “Professor of the Year” and that the Service & Learning Center was a finalist for “Organization of the Year.” Also, nineteen student service leaders were selected and they would gather at a retreat in Cedar City in early June for leadership training co-sponsored by the Utah Campus Compact.
Lacie Jo Huber reported on the closing social for the Alternative Spring Break club that concluded with a collective reflection exercise and drew upon the use of “van journals.” Jeff Hanson reported that he hired a student assistant for the web site revisions. Lisa Assante reported that her Cub Scout dinner, supported by a Service-Learning Enhancement Grant, had gone well the previous week. Steve Barney discussed his presentation on service-learning at the annual meeting of the Rocky Mountain Psychology Association.
A. Guests Wes Curtis and Brian Cottam
Wes Curtis, Director of Regional Services, and Brian Cottam, Associate Director, were introduced and they provided an overview of their ongoing efforts at community outreach and civic engagement. Wes complimented the committee and discussed the “Community Engagement Fund” that is funded through his office. He emphasized the importance of good public relations, noting that his office was working to improve the flow of news releases and other information. Asked about a state-wide effort to promote the Carnegie classification of “community engaged” institutions, Wes stated that he would continue discussions with his counterparts in higher education across the state. Brian Cottam spoke about SUU’s Outdoor Initiative that extend campus involvement to other communities, and particularly to land management agencies in southern Utah. He noted that a strategic planning process was nearly completed, and that his office and programs had enjoyed strong support from SUU’s administration and they hoped to soon hire someone to assist with public relations.
B. Service-Learning Course Approval
The application and supporting materials from Dr. Jean Lopour for a service-learning designation of PE 3090, Adaptive Physical Education, were discussed and then approved unanimously.
