I. Call to Order
Earl Mulderink called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. In attendance: Sheraya Brown (CEC), Veronica Cazares (CEC), Boyd Fife (COSE), Shayla Hill (Student), Karl Stevens (SCPS), Wynne Summers (HSS), Cindy Wright (COSE). Excused: Lisa Assante (BUS), Pam Branin (CEC), Jeff Hanson (PVA).
II. Approval of Minutes
Minutes were approved for the meeting of September 19, 2011.
A. Earl Mulderink, Chair
Earl thanked everyone who attended the Community Engagement Center open house that garnered a nice front-page story in the University Journal. He mentioned that SUU's new VISTA worker, Lucas Knowles, will begin a one-year term (with possibility of renewal) on November 18, 2011. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, Lucas will focus on community partnerships, risk management, and other tasks. The Utah Campus Compact has announced several forthcoming events: the Engaged Faculty Institute will resume in Moab, Utah, February 3-4, 2012, and the UCC Annual Recognition Event and Conference on Civic Engagement is slated for Monday, April 2, 2012. Earl spoke about the "Food and Faiths" campus initiative and the new Student Alliance of Interfaith Leaders (SAIL) that is helping to promote interfaith service and dialog.
B. Pam Branin, Associate Director of the Community Engagement Center
Veronica reported on Pam's behalf about alternative winter and spring breaks. Winter Break service with Habitat for Humanity are planned for Maui, Hawaii, and Rogue Valley, Oregon. Spring Break students will have the opportunity to serve in San Diego, California; Spokane, Washington; Taos, New Mexico; and possibly Mexicali, Mexico. Make A Difference Day was also a success, as the Student Service Corps served local families of active military personnel by doing household and yard work.
C. Other Reports
Following conversations with a Uganda citizen now living in Cedar City, Boyd Fife sought feedback about possible service activities in Uganda focused on improving access to water. Suggestions included working with departments that have already engaged in international service work and tying the program to SUU's Summer Study Abroad options.
IV. New Business
A. CEC Mission, Vision, Values
Following distribution of an outdated mission statement, Earl asked for assistance in making changes as needed to the document. For example, SUU's new mission statement refers to our institutional identity as a public liberal arts and sciences university that supports experiential education. Suggestions are welcome and a version for the CEC will be shared prior to our next meeting.
B. Expanding the Service-Learning Curriculum
1. New Course(s)
Because SUU needs more service-learning classes, committee members were asked about a draft document that suggested new course options within the University College. Wynne Summers suggested that she might pursue SL designation for ENGL 2200, a literature and culture course that would feature service with the Paiute Tribal Center. We discussed "optional" SL credits similar to those offered through the Honors Program through independent contracts. Committee members were urged to encourage colleagues to seek SL course designation.
2. Promoting "Engaged Departments"
We talked about ways to reward engaged departments that might help to inspire more SL courses. Earl suggested that funds be reallocated from the Service-Learning Fellows program to an Engaged Department award, perhaps $1,000 to $1,500 each. Suggestions included asking applicants to supply "forward-looking" materials about what they may do, rather than what they have done, possibly with a two-year program outline.
C. UNIV 3925 Syllabus
This syllabus for UNIV 3925, "Experiential Education Course Proposal," is still in development. This 1-credit P/F course could be completed in eight weeks through which students submit an EE proposal for approval by one of the five engagement centers.
D. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Building upon the past two years with successful applications to the President's Community Service Honor Roll, SUU will apply again before the deadline of December 9, 2011. Faculty will be asked to document all student service and service-learning hours between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. Last year, SUU documented over 76,000 service hours.
E. Community Partners List
An up-to-date spreadsheet of local community partners was shared by email with committee members. Prepared by CEC work-study student Shannon McLean, the list contains contact and other information for nearly 50 community agencies that seek SUU volunteers and service.
