Academic Advising
Understanding Academic Advising:
Academic advising is a process designed to help students with educational planning, courses of instruction, institutional policies and procedures, career options, and information resources. Both the student and the advisor have specific roles. Students are responsible for seeking academic advisement and monitoring their progress towards graduation. Advisors are available to render assistance and provide accurate information. Advisors will reach out to students, while students need to make an effort to stay in contact with their advisor. Students should work with advisors prior to registration to ensure progress towards a degree or certificate.
Each major has full-time academic advisors for that field. Major advisors can help students both with planning majors and minors as well as general education requirements.
Open Option students (those who have not declared a major) have advisors who can help them with the decision making process of choosing a major while, at the same time, helping them select class schedules that are advantageous.
NCAA athletes should meet with their academic advisor and also contact the athletic academic coordinator to verify eligibility requirements.
Before meeting with an academic advisor, students may want to:
- Consider possible course options or areas or interest
- Prepare any questions for the advisor
- Review the SUU general catalog and class schedule
