Counseling and Psychological Services

Application Procedure

Application Materials

Applications to our internship program are submitted using the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI) online, which you can access at the AAPI Online website. All of the application materials will be uploaded using the applicant portal on the APPIC website.

The electronic application includes:

  • Completed AAPI
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Cover letter
  • Three letters of recommendation, including at least two from clinical supervisors
  • Graduate school transcripts

Candidate Selection

The internship selection committee typically consists of the Training Director, Director, and Clinical Director as well as a staff member from Student Services and typically at least one intern.  Each application is read and reviewed according to the following selection criteria:

  • Clear fit between applicant’s interests and goals and the internship program’s setting, training philosophy, and experiences.
  • Therapy experience with young adults and adults in an outpatient setting, preferable a university counseling center.
  • Multicultural knowledge, awareness, and clinical skill.
  • Essays and letters of recommendation that suggest a good fit with our internship program.
  • We also value group therapy experience and assessment experience, as these are required elements of our internship program.

Interview Procedures

Because the APPIC Directory Online does not differentiate between the number of applications received in Phase I versus Phase II, we provide more specific summary information below:

2012-2013 2013-2014 2014-2015
Number of Completed Applications, Phase I 27 8 24
Number of applicants invited for interviews, Phase I 6 3 9
Number of Completed Applications, Phase II 74 56 37
Number of applicants invited for interviews, Phase II 6 11 11

For the 2015 APPIC Match, we plan to interview as many candidates during Phase I as are a good fit for our internship program. During Phase II, we plan to interview 10-12 applicants per available internship slot.  We adhere to the uniform notification date of December 15th to invite applicants for interviews or let them know that they are no longer under consideration. Applicants will be notified by email regarding their interview status.

Interviews with the Selection Committee will be 45 minutes by Skype or phone (according to the applicant's preference) in early January.  Applicants who have been invited to interview may contact staff or current interns to learn more about the internship training program.  Because we recognize that candidates are making decisions about which sites best match their needs at the same time that we’re assessing which candidates are the best matches for what we offer, we are sure to provide time during interviews for candidates to have any questions answered.  We are also available after the interview has ended to answer additional questions by phone or email.
