On-Campus Student Employment Guide
Most campus offices employ student workers in data entry, secretarial/clerical and general office positions. Students are also employed by Chartwell’s Food Service, Custodial, Grounds, Maintenance, Post Office, Heat Plant, Library, Bookstore, Resident Living, Copy Center and as tutors and lab assistants.
- Job Listings
Part-time listings for both on-campus and off-campus jobs are posted on the bulletin boards in Career Services, Sharwan Smith Center 101. Students can also view all part-time jobs, as a “guest user” on our SUU CareerNet. As a guest, login with Username: student, and Password: student.
- Eligibility
To be eligible to work on-campus during the school year, a student must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours.
- Application Procedure
Student jobs are advertised and application forms are available through Career Services. Each department selects its own student employees.
- Documentation
Federal law requires that all employees supply proof of identity and employability. Therefore, ALL STUDENTS MUST SUPPLY APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTS BEFORE THEY CAN BE EMPLOYED ON-CAMPUS. A number of documents will suffice, but the easiest to use are driver’s license (with signature and photograph) and social security card (no photo copies).
- Rate of Pay
Student workers are paid at least minimum wage (currently $6.55/hr.); individual departments may pay student workers at higher rates when the required skill level and/or experience justify a higher rate.
- Work Hours
Departments may adjust work hours to student class schedules. Student workers are usually limited to 20 hours of work per week while school is in session and are restricted to a maximum of 40 hours per week during holidays & summer months.
- Work-Study
Work-Study is part of a federal financial assistance program for students. Work-study awards are made to students as part of the student’s financial aid package. A student who has a work-study award may work in either a work-study position or in a regular-payroll job; however, only students who have received work-study awards will be hired for work-study jobs.
- Authorization
First-time SUU students must complete three payroll forms: the Payroll Action Request, I-9, and W-4. After a student is hired, they need to pick up the forms at Career Services, Sharwan Smith 101, complete the forms and return them to Career Services. STUDENTS MAY BEGIN WORK ONLY AFTER THE 3 COMPLETED FORMS ARE RECEIVED BY CAREER SERVICES. Students who have worked previously at SUU will not have to fill out payroll forms, but may want to fill out a new W4 form.
