Twelve Essentials
These 12 items should be taken on every outdoor outing you take.

- _____ Compass (and knowledge of how to use it)
- _____ Flashlight (or headlamp) with extra batteries and bulb.
- _____ Extra Food
- _____ Extra Clothing - (keep in mind potential bad or cold weather)
- _____ Pocketknife
- _____ Matches
- _____ First Aid Kit
- _____ Sunglasses & Sunscreen
- _____ Water Bottle (full - at least 1 quart if not 2)
- _____ Water Purifier (filter or tablets)
- _____ Candle or other fie starter
General Clothing
Clothing items to be worn on the activity.
- _____ Hat (wool/pile for cool weather; brimmed for sun protection)
- _____ Shirts (according to weather; long-sleeve recommended)
- _____ Jacket (wind breaker, rain jacket, fleece/wool jacket)
- _____ Pants (loose-fitting, light colored nylon pants best, rain pants)
- _____ Hiking Boots (waterproof if there'll be water, rain, or snow)
- _____ Socks (light weight inner socks and wool outer socks)
- _____ (Gaiters)
