In order to attend classes at SUU using VA education benefits you will need to follow the following application process outline. If you have any questions regarding the application process please contact the Veterans Services Office. It will be a good idea to locate your Certificate of Eligibility (if you already have one) and copies of your DD-2834 (Notice of Basic Eligibility – if using Chapter 1606) or DD-214, as you will need to provide the VA Coordinator at SUU with those documents.
- Apply to SUU: The process for applying to SUU.
- Apply for the VA benefit: applicants must complete the appropriate paperwork to initiate their benefit.
- First-time applicants for GI Bill Chapters 1606, 1607, 30, and 33 (Post 9/11) must fill out a VA Form 22-1990 “Application for VA Education Benefits.”
- First-time applicants for Chapter 35 (Survivor’s and Dependent’s Educational Assistance) must fill out a VA Form 22-5490.
- First-time applicants for Chapter 33 (Post 9/11) Dependents Using Transferred Benefits (TEB) must complete a VA Form 22-1990E “Application (to use) Transferring Entitlement (TOE) Benefits.”
- If you are transferring to SUU from another institution, and wish to continue using Chapters 1606, 1607, 30, or 33 (Post 9/11) benefits, complete a VA Form 22-1995 and submit that form to the SUU Veterans Services Office.
- If you are transferring to SUU from another institution, and wish to continue using Chapter 35 benefits, complete a VA Form 22-5495 and submit that form to the SUU Veterans Services Office.
- These forms may be completed online at www.gibill.va.gov and submitted electronically via VONAPP (Veterans Online Application website). Paper forms are also available in the SUU Veterans Services Office. These can be completed and submitted to the SUU VA Coordinator to mail to the VA RPO in Muskogee, OK.
- Provide Documents to the SUU Veterans Services Office: The following documents need to be turned in to the SUU Veterans Services Office in order for them to complete your file.
- DD-2834 – this document is the Notice of Basic Eligibility that you received after completing your Initial Entrance Training. If you plan to use Chapter 1606 benefits, you will need to turn in this document.
- DD-214 – this is the document that you received after being discharged from the military.
- College Fund/Kicker Contract – If you received a “kicker” when you enlisted, you will need to provide the SUU Veterans Services Office with a copy of that contract to ensure that you receive those extra funds.
- Certificate of Eligibility – This is the document that you received from the Department of Veterans Affairs notifying you that you were eligible to receive education benefits. You receive this document after applying for benefits through the VONAPP at the Department of Veteran Affairs.
- Register for Classes: After the SUU Admissions Office has notified you of your acceptance, you should contact the SUU VA Coordinator. The VA Coordinator must build a SUU/VA file for you. This file will be maintained throughout your time at SUU and will be stored for three years after the date of completion of your last semester of enrollment.
- Register for classes using your mySUU Student Web Portal.
- For help with which classes you should enroll in, please contact the Academic Advisor for the program you intend to complete. You can make an appointment with an advisor.
- Certify Classes: After you have (1) been accepted to SUU, (2) met with your Academic Advisor, and (3) registered for classes, you will need to (4) complete the SUU Veterans Certification Form and submit it to the SUU Veterans Services Office. At this time the VA Coordinator will go over your file to ensure that all of the appropriate paperwork has been turned in. If there are no gaps, the VA Coordinator will certify applicable courses with the VA so that you can receive VA benefits for that semester.
- You must certify your classes through this final step each semester. Classes that do not count towards the completion of your degree cannot be certified through the VA.
