Alternative Spring Break: Mexico

 PICTURES from 2002-2003

The Alternative Spring Break trip to Guaymas, Mexico 2003 was an extremely successful adventure and life-changing experience.  Some of the activities that members of ASB did in Guaymas included teaching English at elementary schools, making Adobe bricks, painting and cleaning local parks, helping out at the soup kitchen, painting the hospital, playing with children from Club Jerry, and most of all constructing a new sewage system (thanks to the men of the group!).  We got a lot accomplished and really made a difference!

Here is a letter that Jerry (from Club Jerry) wrote to ASB, thanking its members for the help and volunteer efforts that were made...

Dear Becky and the SUU team.                                                                            March 18, 2003

My apologies for the delay in answer your letter. Thank you very very very much for coming to Club Jerry and doing all that construction and
maintenance work as well as taking time to play with the boys and girls. The kids are very grateful for you playing with them. They definitely have a BOND with the team of  S.U.U. Each year, they ask if you will be coming. Again, I thank you. You all do put a meaning in their lives. Thank you also to Boyd and his crew for installing the sewer system. Would you believe, that same Friday morning, shortly after you left, the sewer overflowed at the new bottom manhole? All the stones and gravel that was lower down in the old pipe had plugged. In a short time, the Water Works was here to unplug it and they did a good job. It has not plugged up since. It is so nice and pleasant to have all those holes plugged in the wall. Now, we don't get the smell, dust and so much noise from the street. Your new mural has again taken the interest of the local people and is the topic of discussion every
day. Everyone loves it and enjoy stopping a few seconds to admire it. Your presence in the community is appreciated and respected. Thank you for making a difference in this barrio. Today, you have sown a seed, in the future, you will find a fruit.

This year, the group program has gone extremely well despite co-coordinating two other groups interacting at the club. The children had a great week with all of you. This past week, the group from Mesa and Flagstaff Newman College has also participated in activities with the kids. This coming week, will be a quiet week. We will return to our normal activities. I am presently approaching the adolescent boys and girls to form teams of leadership. Already about 20 boys and girls have signed in. It seems like it is time to begin training program for youth leadership among our local kids so that they will soon take over the responsibilities and activities of the club. As I have said before, this is God's Work I am only His instrument.

Thank you also for the dollars and pesos that you donated. Be assured that it will be used for the needs of the kids.  Monday, I will buy some gallons of milk so that we can continue our tradition of giving the kids chocolate milk each before they leave. Thanks to you.

Please extend my regards and my (our) gratitude to all of you who have come down to share yourselves with us.

Gratefully, Jerry
