Kade Janes, Outstanding Student Service HighlightThe Service & Learning Center wishes to recognize Kade Janes, a junior Sociology major from Cedar City, for his outstanding contributions in organizing and implementing a language-tutoring program in the Iron County School District.
Janes recognized a need for language translators and tutors for students whose primary language is not English and went to work to solve the problem. He met with the school board and proposed an idea for SUU students to tutor elementary, middle school and high school students.
After recruiting over 25 fellow students and friends for the project, he assigned them according to their schedules at Fiddler's elementary, East and North Elementary Schools, Cross Hollows, Cedar Middle School, Cedar High School, Canyon View High School, and Parowan High School.
Each tutor volunteers about two hours a week working to help translate lessons and assignments for 50 to 60 Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian Students.
Before coming to SUU, Janes was a students at BYU and translated Spanish for children at Franklin Elementary in Provo. After moving to Cedar City this semester, he applied what he had learned in Provo to his program here. His service has been greatly recognized and appreciated by the students, their parents, teachers, and principals.
Rob Ferre, a senior communication major from Salt Lake City volunteers with the new program and said, "I get the wonderful opportunity to take two hours of my week to help two girls become more comfortable with the English language. I love it!"
Janes commented that "a lot of the kids are happier now because they can understand what is being taught. They are more comfortable and less intimidated in the classroom," he said.
Thanks, Kade for truly making a difference!
Construction Management Outstanding Service Highlight
From installing benches on campus, to providing support for the local Women's Crisis Center, to donating labor to Habitat for Humanity, SUU construction management students have worked hard using their skills to provide service to SUU and the surrounding community.
Boyd Fife, assistant professor of construction management has made service learning a priority as he engages his students in meaningful hands-on experience.
Recently, the framing systems class constructed roofs for two agricultural buildings.
The projects progressed rapidly and were done safely with the skills and knowledge provided by the students," Fife said.
One of the structures was 50 feet in length, 27 feet wide, and 12 feet high.
Fife said the owner, who is an active participant in the community and has served on a voluntary bases on many projects, would have had a difficult time with such a large project.
"The students set trusses, installed blocking, subfacia, lookouts, gable end rafters, and sheeted the entire building in eight hours!" Fife said.
This year, some construction management students are preparing for an eventful Spring Break in Guaymas, Mexico with the Alternative Spring Break Club to participate in humanitarian service.
Thanks for a job well done and for continuing to give through service learning!
