Free for Students without Insurance Coverage who have a risk factor for Hepatitis B
In order to better serve the students of SUU, the SUU Student Health Services has enrolled in the Utah Department of Health’s program to provide free Hepatitis B Vaccine to SUU students over the age of 19 who do not have insurance coverage for this vaccine. The student must also have a risk factor for the disease to be eligible. The funding for this program is from a grant. It is not guaranteed that funding will be available for students to receive all three doses.
Please check your vaccination records to see if you have already received the vaccine. If you have received three doses of the vaccine, you do not need to be vaccinated again.
Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Hepatitis B virus is spread through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person.
Get more information about Hepatitis B infection from the CDC.
The following are risk factors for becoming infected with the Hepatitis B virus.
Hepatitis B vaccine is given as a 3-dose series:
For more information about the vaccine see the Hepatitis B Vaccine Information Sheet (VIS)
It will be the student’s responsibility to make and keep appointments to receive the vaccine. A $5.00 no show fee will be charged for missed appointments, or appointments not cancelled 24 hours in advance.
As part of SUU Student Health Services agreement with the Utah Department of Health, we are required to participate in the Utah Statewide Immunization Information System (USIIS). This is a confidential state wide data base to document immunizations. The student can opt out of having their information entered into the data base. SUU Student Health Services encourages students to participate in this data base, as it allows their immunization records to be accessed by health care providers throughout Utah who participate in USIIS, and by departments of health in Utah.
If a student has not received care at the SUU Student Health Clinic prior to receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine they will be required to pay the onetime $10.00 record fee.
Forms will be available at the Wellness Center as well.
