Two
Presentation by Peter Smerick12:00-2:00 PM Sharwan Smith Center Starlight Room
During the early morning hours of December 26, 1996, Patsy Ramsey left her
bedroom, walked down a spiral staircase, and discovered a multi-page
hand printed ransom note. The note demanded $118,000 for the safe return
of her 6-year old daughter- Jon Benet.
Later that day, John Ramsey discovered the body of his daughter, Jon
Benet, in a small wine cellar in the basement.
From the very beginning the investigation was botched, and to this day
there is controversy as to whether an intruder committed this crime or
was the crime committed by a member of the family.
A behavioral assessment of both theories of the crime will be presented
and the attendees will have the opportunity of discussing and analyzing
the case from a criminological and psychological perspective.
5:00-7:00 PM Sharwan Smith Center Ballroom
The movie “The Silence of the Lambs” introduced the concept
of Criminal Profiling to the American public and television programs such as
“Criminal Minds” have glamorized the profession.
This program will be provided by Peter Smerick, one of the original FBI
Criminal Profilers, who will take the students “behind the scenes” regarding
the role played by actual Violent Crime Analysts compared with Hollywood’s
portrayal of this career.
This presentation will not include “war stories” of past profiling
successes. Instead, techniques employed by Criminal Profilers will be
discussed and the audience will have the opportunity of analyzing crimes and
learn how to think like a Profiler.
