What, When, and Where is the Six-Week Summer Program?

From June 3 to July 11, 2012, the most diligent Upward Bound students will be chosen to attend our intensive six-week program. Students live in the  campus dorms at Southern Utah

University and attend academic classes from 8 AM to 12:30 PM, Monday through Friday (see a typical schedule below).  Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors with the appropriate skill level can

receive university credit for the classes they successfully pass.  Each afternoon, students volunteer for up to two hours a day at a local business and obtain valuable experience and insight into

potential future career choices. We will provide ample time for study, assisted by academic tutors to improve academic techniques. There will also be recreation and exercise opportunities daily,

and occasional guest speakers during the evenings.

After such a rigorous academic week, we change gears on Saturday and have a day of recreational activities. We may hike, swim, bowl, rappel, or raft.  We want the students to participate in

many fun and different group building activities.   On Sunday we do not plan activities so students may relax and, if they wish, attend the church of their choice . For those students who

do attend church, we will arrange transportation to and from the church as needed.

The sixth, and final,  week of the Summer Program is our 'Urban Experience'.

What is the Urban Experience?

For many, the urban experience is the favorite part of the six-week Summer Program. We spend our last 5-6 days of the six weeks in an urban (or big city) setting , where we can experience all the

educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities a metropolitan area has to offer.  We tour colleges and universities in the area and may visit museums, zoos, aquamarines, and/or other local

places of interest.  The last few summers the SUU Upward Bound students visited Los Angeles, San Diego or Santa Barbara. Highlights of these trips included visits to Disneyland, Knotts Berry

Farm, Sea World, Magic Mountain, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Santa Barbara Botanical Garden,  and swimming in the ocean (of course!).
