Bill 011-09 Theatre Crescendo
SB 011-09*
Comments:
I think this is a wonderful bill! The Masters of Arts Administration has needed their own production company for a while now. It would benefit the school as well as the community.

I am strongly against this bill. If passed, the SUUSA Senate would be using student fee's to fund a class project. The students that are participating in this project are receiving a grade. Should we be paying so select students can receive a higher grade in the class? I think not.

I'm also against this bill. There is a precedence that is set if we let this bill pass. We would have difficulty drawing a line and refusing other class projects in the future, regardless of their merits. We must take in to consideration the student body, and whether or not students want their fees to fund such graded class projects.

I have many concerns with this bill. One being that the production presented for this play only has a cast of 3 individuals, which have already been selected. I would have hoped that more SUU student would be involved with this production.

As one of the Arts Administration students and the one who submitted the bill, I want to respond to some of these concerns voiced here. I think it is important to point out that the Arts Administration students are working as a team on this project and that we are evaluated based on our teamwork and our fulfillment of our individual class responsibilities. The money we are asking for will not allow us to improve our grade -- it will simply improve the quality of the production and the range of our administrative practice. This is a way for us to get the hands on experience we will need in our future jobs, much like feild trips, labs, or conferences for other disciplines.
Further, it is important to recognize that this project will benefit the SUU student community by: offering more variety in the arts (while not in competition with existing groups or productions), creating an open dialogue in the SUU and Cedar City communities through post-show talkbacks and other educational events, creating further interaction between SUU and Cedar city communities, and providing practical experience opportunities for other SUU students in the areas of Acting, Run Crew, House Management, Stage Management, etc.
I look forward to an opportunity to talk with you all and answer any further questions at the next Senate meeting.
Thank you,

I would point out that using student fees for a credit-earning practicum experience is not a new practice. Actually, all of the Theatre and Dance productions are funded by student fees for which many, if not all, students are receiving credit. They are registered for a class (Rehearsal and Performance).
And there are a lot more than three students involved in this production. There are more than a dozen directly involved and many more that have volunteered to help the production during the performance dates.
